Fave Five

Sounds like we're compatible, Sandra! :D ;)

Seriously, to each his own, but when it comes to auto racing, golf OR boxing I'd rather watch paint dry.

However, I am a BIG fan of tennis' Grand Slam! :up

I love tennis too, and not just the Grand Slam. The semifinal match last weekend in Madrid on the Tennis Channel was amazing. Nadal against Simon...a Spaniard against a Frenchman in Madrid. It was riveting, and Nadal lost!

Nadal has Ed Hochuli-arms though...don't see that very often on a tennis player.

He is not even in my league!!

Marlins and Reds, Raiders, Syracuse University basketball, 76ers and Heat and the clincher....LOVE The U, but went to Florida State...BEAT THAT RAAAA-MMMYYYYY!!!:p:p:p;)

It is still the same number of states. 5 :D

salsa,

this is a bit off-topic, but how did you become a Raiders fan?

I USE TO be a huge Notre Dame fan and that's when I saw Dave Casper in his senior year. When he went to Oakland...I was marveled by a LEFT HANDED QB. I SWEAR he had to be from another planet...I had NEVER seen a left handed QB until I saw Kenny Stabler....and my love for the team grew from there. I love the Raiders the most when they had Lester Haynes and Mike Haynes during the LA Raider years. Personally, I think there was NEVER a better cover duo in the history of the NFL, IMHO.

As far as the NFL announcers go, like most I favor Summerall, Enberg and Michaels.

However, two of my other favorites deserve a mention:

1. Charlie Jones- passed away earlier this year (same day as Tim Russert, so it was pushed to the back page). When I was growing up, if I heard Charlie's voice, I KNEW it was a big AFC game or the Fiesta Bowl on NBC! :up
It saddened me when I learned of his death, because I felt like I lost a longtime friend. :(

The other thing about Charlie, was he was counted on unlike any other play-by-play guy I can ever remember, to cultivate new analyst talent. Over the years Charlie partnered with Len Dawson, John Brodie, Bob Griese, Jimmy Cefalo among others. But it was his partenship with the cerebral Todd Christensen that I liked the best. Jones and Christensen, IMO, were the most underrated NFL tandem since I've been watching football.

2. Vin Scully- we all know what a GREAT baseball guy Vinny is, but he was so underrated as an NFL announcer on CBS. Vinny called the legendary "The Catch" game back in January 1982 for CBS.

It's a real shame that only lasted for two years.

They were what I like to call 'big-game announcers,' for they had a tendency to call some very meaningful games; the Florida State/Notre Dame 'Game of the Century' in 1993, the legendary Bills/Oilers comeback and one of my favorite non-Bills playoff game- the Broncos/Raiders AFC Wild-Card Game in January 1994.

As a Bills fan who grew up in AFC territory, I remember Charlie Jones very well.

BTW, Bill- who are YOUR favorite members? You're certainly popular on a lot of our lists.

Fave Five Announcing Teams:

1. Summerall and Madden at CBS(Not Fox)...Granted they did many Cowboys games in there era together but worked was outstanding in the playoffs.

2. Marv Albert and Mike Fratello on NBC/TNT...another great pairing that added depth and sarcasm.

3. Chick Hearn and Stu Lantz (Prime Ticket/FSN)...Kind of a "Odd Couple", Stu more the straight guy to Hearn and his sayings.

4. Don Criqui and Bob Trumpy(NBC)...under rated crew who did many of the "B" NFL games on NBC....also work together on Radio for WW1.

5. Keith Jackson and Bob Griese (ABC)....Two straight talkers who gave the right amount of commentary to College Football.

As for the posters here....I like you all, some of you are a bit myopic in your views...and I think we know who they are :D....but don't take it out on people. It's nice to visit a board and not have flame war or trolls that hang around....It also appears that we have a pretty wide age spectrum here, and that just adds to the different views that we all have.

Bill.....I am more of a sarcastic SOB than a funny man....but appreciate the complement. Thanks :)

Bill,

I once had the pleasure to ask Vinny what game he considers his most memorable outside of Dodgers baseball. Without a moment's hesitation he said to me "Why 'The Catch' of course! But I would quickly also have to mention game six of the '86 World Series."
