external hard drive with dish recievers: recording length

can anyone tell me how much recording time you could get on a external hard drive? i have a 250 gig just laying here from western digital, and i am thinking i might activate the 211 option. or if anyone can tell me how much time on 500 gig. thanks in advance for your response.
