External Hard Drive Archive Bug Thread

I cancelled my Dish service, but after realizing that I could not view my recordings stored on my external hard drive, I called back and had my service restored. Now, I cannot view the recordings on the external hard drive. I get the prompt to "enable" the external hard drive, even though it was previously enabled, and my account online reflects that it is enabled. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Call up tech support and have them rehit the boxes with the enable code... You should be fine after that..... 1-800-333-DISH

If you restarted with a "new" account, you won't have access to those recordings. They are only viewable on the same account as they were recorded on.

But, try what Bob suggested, hopefully that works.

New to this

I purchased a 500 GB Hitachi Desk Life Studio EHD and I'm having problems with the VIP 612 reciever recognizing it. I already formatted it on the computer like the dish representative said yet the problem still remains. Is it a matter of getting it enabled or something else? Thanks in advance.

What error message are you getting from your 612 when you turn on the drive?

error message 850 saying its unsupported. im pretty sure i followed all the guidelines, only thing could is it might be flash memory but idk how to check.

Is that a self-powered drive, or are you trying to power it from the 612's USB port? I recently had to replace a power supply for one of my drives because I was getting the same 850 error from my 622 on it. Replaced the in-line power transformer for the drive and my 622 recognized it immediately. Just a thought...

Are you using a power cord? I just did some brief reading on that drive and it says "USB bus-powered or 5VDC" Your receiver will not support a USB powered EHD. Do you have it powered from a wall outlet?

EDIT: long_time_DNC beat me to it.

I've never seen a powered-drive also try to use voltage from the USB. Just out of curiosity, why'd the tech have you format it on your computer first?

I've never done that. I just take the EHD out of the box, plug the power cord into the surge protector, plug the USB cable into my powered hub connected to my 622, turn it on and when my 622 recognizes it, tell the 622 to go ahead and format it. The EHD typically comes pre-formatted for PC or Mac anyway, so why the format on your computer first?

The Life Studio drive is one of those rare drives that someone went out of their way to insure that it wouldn't work with anything. From what I can gather, it has two partitions. One is set up as a hard drive and the other looks like a CD-ROM.

I would recommend getting just about any other drive as this is going to be more trouble than it is worth just to get it to look like a single hard drive.

Next time don't go for a fancy unit that includes all sorts of computer software and tools. A plain, single spindle USB 2.0 drive is what is required and what you should look for. The software will be wasted and the setup will be unnecessarily complicated.

This program: HDDGURU: HDD Low Level Format Tool will easily take care of the CDFS partition :) .

Thanks for the help so far. I used the low level format tool then plugged it into the reciever to have it format it, but no go. Still error message 850: unsupported.

I think this is one of the rare cases in which one can take the error message at face value, "unsupported".

If I were you, I don't think I'd waste anymore time on trying to make that particular drive work with your receiver. I'd pick up one of the tried and true, bare-bones EHD's referenced in this thread.

Hopefully, you can still get some use out of the drive for other applications. Although, now, you've most certainly removed any bells and whistles that made it attractive for desktop applications in the first place.

That's not to say you can put the software back on the drive via the manufacturer's website.

I agree...
