External Hard Drive Archive Bug Thread

Im using a Dish Network vip622 HD DVR (s/w ver L614rbgd-N). My Ext. HDD is a Maxtor one touch 4 (Not plus) it runs on version 4.7.0.7. (Both units software upto date) When I activated the USB port on the DVR box everything seem to work, but when I tried to archive anything (most items were less than 900m) kept receiving the 855 error, then it would say that the Ext HDD is in use for another 5 min?? I pulled the Ext. HDD off the DVR box, reformated it using winxp and reinstalled the maxtor software to change the powersetting on the ext. HDD. to "never" spindown. What I found before formating was the DVR formated it into 3 different sized; 1) 10g 2) 500g 3)200g. or something like that?? Strange. Anyone have the same experience with the dvr formating like this or is this normal with a dvr. I know I am probably repeating some of the same information that has been thrown around on the very big thread, but after reading so many pages the eys start to cross!! I will try to reconnect it to the DVR box and reformat to see if this works.

Well after reconnecting my Maxtor Ext. HDD back to Vip622 HD DVR, let the dvr reformat ext hdd and so far it has been able to copy from the dvr to ext hdd. I haven't tried testing for some of the issue describe in the forum, but i will in time.

New 722 Ext drive Problems

Almost a year and a half later, 722 still has the same problems with a USB external HD ( Seagate 500gb Free Agent) as Dfergie was having. After getting one or two recordings to "archive" onto the Ext HD, the next time you try to "archive" to the ext HD you get that 855 error and the only way I've found to get around this is to reboot the 722. (a pain in the butt). Has anyone found a better way?

Reboot a DVR without arse pain: press Power button on front panel for 5-7 sec.

you can hook up one of those electric eye remote switches - used a lot for holiday decorations- then just use the remote to power it on/ off from the comfort of your chair.

ayeray - This sort of problem is almost always due to the USB chipset in the external drive. I've been using a Seagate ST3750330AS 750GB SATA drive in a THERMALTAKE N0028USU BlacX 2.5/3.5in SATA Hard Drive USB Docking Station for 18 months now on my 722 with nary a problem. Disconnect the Drive. Pull out the Seagate hard drive and put it into a BlacX dock. I bet it will work just fine.

USB External Powered Hard Drive

I was wondering, sorry this is not a bug, but some HD can be purchased that are powered only by the USB plug (no AC adapter). Are these hard drive OK to use as an extra add on for the dish receiver? Will a USB powered only HD work with the Dish?

Their EHD FAQ isn't entirely factual.

You can connect a USB hub to the receiver, just don't turn on more than one drive at a time. Turn off one drive before turning on another. I have a 4-port hub connected to my 622 with 3 750GB drives connected to the hub. No problems, as long as I only have one drive at a time powered on.

I did that (4-port hub) with only one receiver. Now I have 2 722s and 6 EHDs by the TV, so I have several (4, only because I ran out of outlets) EHDs powered up but sleeping and just plug the right USB cable as needed. Each drive and USB end are color coded and marked in my spreadsheet the same way. Each 722 has a color, too.

Are you talking about using a type of remote to turn the Ext. HDD on and off? My Ext. HDD does not come with an ON/OFF switch, Which Is that the easiest way or the best way of turning the Ext. HDD on and off without physically unplugging it? How would you hook this up?

yes - you plug the HDD into the base which then plugs into the wall outlet and then you have a little remote with an on/off switch. it's the same devices used a lot for holiday decorations - you can find them at drug stores, target just about any retail place. they're about $10 - maybe cheaper now after the holidays.

that's what i used on my maxtor till i figured out how to disable the sleep mode.

Hmmm... it says "12 Mb/s" USB 2.0 is 480 Mb/s. 480Mbit/sec roughly equals 60MB/sec. Of course, real throughput of the hard drive in the case will be 20-40MB/sec.

I agree with guruka...a USB 2.0 hub would be the best way to go. That's what I did and have had no problems at all...

My 622 went bad and I was sent a 722 as replacement. I want to transfer everything on the old one to the new, but don't think I'll need the external drive once that's completed. What I'd like to do:

Connect a hard drive, format it as required by Dish, copy the programs, reconnect it to the new receiver, copy from the hard drive to the receiver, disconnect, then reconnect the hard drive to my computer and reformat it to be a backup drive for the computer. I'm running Vista.

Can this be done?
