External Hard Drive Archive Bug Thread

Starting three days ago I have been unable to view the recordings on my external 750 GB WD MyBook USB drive. I can see all of them, but when I try to play one, I just get a black screen and see the banner of the channel to which my 622 is currently tuned. If I try to re-access the USB drive through the menus, the 622 tells me I'm already playing back a recording, but of course, I can't see anything. Reboots don't fix the problem. They just eliminate the "already playing" message.

Everything worked fine up till this point and I have 50-60 recordings on that drive. Is anyone else seeing this? Do I have to copy all the programs back and forth to the receiver and then back to the hard drive (ugh!) or get another hard drive do the Ubuntu copy trick mentioned earlier in the thread (lotta work there too)? Any other suggestions?

When the disk won't write the whole file (fragmentation of a nearly full disk) I get a message that it is in use by another user and I cannot even see what is there. TV2 was not on. The solution short of reboot is to turn on TV2 and turn it off. Then I can send more but unless I remove something the new addition had better be smaller. Oh, the pains of finite disk size.

Aside: with the 10^4 increase of size/dollar in the last 20 years--even ignoring inflation, I guess in 20 years we will have enough storage to record every minute of our life. But who would be interested?

Having the exact same problem. Nothing on my EHD that would be devastating to lose, so I'm just sitting back and expecting it'll eventually be fixed with SW upgrade.

Well I have three external drives. Before two of them were on the basement receiver and one on the living room. Now all three work on the basement receiver and none work in the living room. It's a start I guess...

I tried calling tech support twice and they claim that this is a new issue. Of course none of them know anything about the household code and they all swear that the reason that none of my drives work on my living room DVR is that I have already switched them three times (I have not switched them at all yet).

Listen up Dish, I am not going to threaten to quit over you not adding any new HD but if I have to deal with those idiots that answer your phones much more I will find someone else.

120inna55 - Thanks. Glad to hear I'm not the only one! They've got to be updating the software soon to support Dishonline.com remote control for timers.

Are both your boxes running L449? Do both have the same household key?

I also have problems with the WD Essential Edition (750GB - round light). I'd get similar problems of lockup during playback on some programs.

You'll probably need to transfer back the salvagable recordings (some will probably cause a USB lockup).

I tried reformatting the drive in a PC multiple times. Eventually the error on the 622 returned (repeated on two different 622's). I no longer use this drive for PVR archival (it's fine on a PC).

You could pull the drive out and put it in a different enclosure. But, it'll still require a reformat.

Yikes. I can't transfer them back either. I get "USB Error." The WD MyBook 750 (yep, round light) has worked fine up till now. If it doesn't recover on its own, I may have to use the Ubantu workaround to copy to another EHD. So.. no Seagates and the WD drive may be unusable. Is there any drive that no one has had any problems with?

How many of you who are getting lockup/freeze and some of the other ODD isssues are deleting content from your EHD/archive drive? Just curious.

I apologize in advance, I know I have read in the past it is straightforward and simple. But is there somewhere with some instructions for setting up my EHDD or do I need any? I finally jumped and bought one. Thanks for any help.

Dreaded 866 message

I've been using a Seagate Free Agent Pro 750 with my 622
for several months, unplugging and replugging the USB cable
whenever I need to do something, without any other
problems.

Sunday night, however, I got an 866 message (rx and HD
don't match) and I can't get around it. I only have one
rx and one HD, and the HD has never been plugged in to a
computer or anything else.

One night CSR hinted that an update may have done this;
another told me today none has been done. At his
suggestion, I tried reboots including unplugging everything
for awhile. I also had CSR send reauthorize signal. I
gather trying to reach anyone knowledgable is difficult.

Have I lost all archives? If so, how could I trust this
setup any more? HELP!

I'm in the same boat (others have posted about it as well), this happend on one of my three drives. I've been emailing dish about the issue for about a week. Yesterday I emailed asking for an update or at least a temporay revert back to the "zero" key to get things going again. Needless to say I didn't get an adequate reponse. So today I sent another note saying I would like the issue escalated further and wanted someone to call me about it. And if it is not resolved I would like my $40 activation fee back until it is. So I'm waiting for the email response and then will probably call about the issue.

Read back a few pages. This has been in discussion for about a week. The receiver external hard drive key is now being downlinked from the satellite providing all receivers in the household the same key. This allows a drive to be moved between the receivers in a home (but has caused the key to change).

Let the receiver remate the hard drive (you are allowed to do this three times). You will not lose any recordings unless you're getting a message about the drive being "reformatted".

David, I did read the earlier pages about keys, but I'm not sure what you mean by "let the receiver remate the hard drive". It appears that if I hit the "yes" button in the 866 message box, the disk will be reformatted and all files lost. I've tried disconnecting/power downing things in different sequences without effect.

How exactly do you recommend I procede?

Hal

The message I got was 788 back in post 688 of this thread:
"The attached external USB device is currently configured for another DISH Network receiver. External DVR archive devices may only be used with one receiver at a time.

"Would you like to update the USB Storage device to allow this DISH Network receiver access to its contents? (Yes) (Cancel) (No)"

I considered it resolved by post 728 as their having finally instituted the whole house key. It looks like the CSRs (even the Tech ones) still do not understand.

If your message is 866 then it is different and you should watch out for reformat.
Follow David_Levin's advice.

Yes, you are correct in that there are 2 separate issues here. What you mentioned occurred on all 3 of my drives intiallyand they worked fine after doing so. The next day I got the 866 error on only one of my drives and it does indeed say you will lose all content. It's almost as if the drive lost the key. The drive I have problems with is the one I moved content too immediately after updating the key. I let dish know this and maybe that is part of the problem or can lead them in the right direction.
