EHD Code 852

After upgrading to Hopper 3, I am still getting the error code 852 every morning when I turn on the Hopper. So I would say there is an issue with the EHD and not the Hopper. I changed the USB cable and still get the code. This EHD is a WD 500G and is about 8 years old. Time to replace it.

Is there a way to force the EHD attached to my Hopper 3 to re-format? I have transferred the recordings from it that I want and don't want what's left. I want to see if this will fix the error from popping up on first Hopper start up in the mornings.

If you got a computer plug it in to it, wipe it there then plug it back into the H3 the H3 should reformat it I think.

Formatted the EHD on my laptop and then plugged her in the H3 and performed a Hopper format. Transferred a couple recordings back to the EHD. Everything is working good. Will see if the error pop up happens in the morning when I fire up the Hopper. That is the only time I get it is in the morning startup. Thanks again.

I have one western digital drive connected to my living room hopper with sling and two western digital drives connected to my family room hopper with sling and I do not get your error message. It sounds like your hopper with sling receivers stop recognizing the drives and then realize the drives are present.

I have noticed a couple of times that my family room hopper with sling will stop seeing one of the two drives. This has happened 4 or 5 times. When it happens I power down the drive and when it powers back up it is recognized.

Of coarse I never had any problems with the old interface. The problem started with the new interface.

This EHD error started with the CUI too. It has identical problem when I switched to Hopper 3. I think this EHD is going bad. It is almost 10 years old.

I don't think that it is the hard drive. My family room hopper with sling has stopped recognizing one of the two attached drives 4 or 5 times. However, I noticed that the drive that is not recognized is not the same drive each time. I think that the USB drivers in the new software still have issues.

No telling. My other WD EHD is the same model and it still is purring along. I guess I can flip flop the EHDs and see if the problem follows the problem EHD. Will see what it does in the morning when I fire up the Hopper and go from there.

No error code this morning. Maybe reformatting the EHD did the trick. I wouldn't think so but, go figure. Time will tell

I'm not 100% convinced but its looking good. I have noticed people off and on having EHD problems may have stumbled onto a fix for some of those problems they are having. Time will tell, until the next update anyway.:devilish
Yep, for sure. That WD EHD is pretty old. Probably going bad.

Go over to GRC.com and get a copy of SpinRite to find and repair disk errors. Or, heck, new EHDs are dirt cheap. I replaced a 250 GB Seagate that was close to the same age as your WD drive with a 1 TB drive that is quieter, uses less power, and cost about a third of the 250GB drive's original cost.

Problem is, we're started into the realm of lower-capacity drives costing more since the manufacturers are going to the larger capacities. Dish needs to enable support for EHDs greater than 2 TB, or at least support larger drives capped at 2 TB if there is some Content Licensing deal that restricts the maximum size of an EHD. But you should still be able to find a 2 TB EHD from WD or Seagate for around $70-$80.
