PHILADELPHIA -- Convicted dogfighting-ring operator Michael Vick hopes to own a dog again someday.

The Philadelphia Eagles quarterback told TheGrio.com in a video interview posted this week that he genuinely cares for animals and one day hopes to have a dog as a household pet, saying it would be just another "big step" in his rehabilitation process.

"I would love to get another dog in the future," Vick told the website. "I think it would be a big step for me in the rehabilitation process. I think just to have a pet in my household and to show people that I genuinely care, and my love, and my passion for animals."

Vick served 18 months in prison after being convicted in 2007 in the Virginia-based ring. The federal judge overseeing the case also prohibited him from ever owning another dog.

"Vick should be banned from owning dogs for life," Jane Dollinger, spokeswoman for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said in a news release this week. "Just as convicted pedophiles aren't allowed free access to children, anyone who is responsible for hanging, electrocuting, or shooting dogs and who causes them to suffer in other unimaginable ways should never again be allowed access to dogs."

Since his release from prison, Vick has become an advocate for the Humane Society of the United States and makes school appearances to talk to students about his past. Vick said he's doing that work because he wants to.

"Well, first off, the court doesn't make it an obligation for me to go out and speak," Vick said. "It doesn't make it an obligation for me to work with the Humane Society. I'm putting in the hard work to do it so it's not for any personal benefit, it's to help others."

Vick's on-the-field success this season has made his story more compelling -- from star quarterback to reviled dogfighter to comeback kid. And now he's adding mentor to his resume.

"I think if I can help five or six kids daily, then I'm playing my position as a positive role model in our society," Vick told TheGrio. "I tell a lot of people that it's easy to do the wrong thing. It's hard to do the right thing."

Vick said he allowed outside influences to affect his behavior, but said prison helped him see the changes he needed to make.

"I hate to use our culture as an excuse, but it is what it is and that's what happened and that's the way I thought about it growing up," Vick said about dogfighting. "This is just the way we were brought up."

I think Vick is pushing it a little too far here. Hoping to cash in on his popularity now, I suppose....

I don't have a problem with Vick playing in the NFL. He, literally, did his time... prison time.

On the other hand, I strongly believe that torturing animals shows a sick and twisted mind. It's a strange day when a PETA spokesperson makes sense to me, but this statement pretty much says what I was going to.

I'm not so sure Vick should ever be allowed to own a dog again. I'm pretty sure he blew that opportunity for good.

That's like allowing a sex offender to adopt a kid. Shouldn't be allowed.

Just thinking the same thing...

now I am on the other side of the fence. Let him have a little dog...one that couldnt be trained to fight. Maybe one from an animal shelter...and have someone from the shelter show up at his house maybe once a month for a year to see how he is treating this dog.

so peta says he cant own a dog....what about a cat?

....what about a cat?
I'd have no problem with him having a cat... on the condition that the cat outweigh him. Let's see him f*** with this guy!

So NOW Vick is at the same level as a pedophile?! And a hunter? Should he be allowed to have a gun? He killed just for sport also....hell, he doesn't he bury them, he stuffs them.

Why not...are SO SURE that he going to kill and mistreat this animal?

I'm not saying he would, but you didn't think he would have a dog ring prior to them finding him with one either.

Does he still hang out with the same people ?
I'm sure that it wasn't ALL Vicks doing in the first place, but he was the one financing it.

No one expected what Vick did...Does he still hang with those guys...all indications are no. And I agree with your last statement, BUT, he was the big name in the entire investigation. I am sure if there was a BIGGER name, he would have come down on them harder.

Ok, lets give him a dog, just lets strictly enforce the type of dog he can have, no dog that has a violent history at all.

Lets give him his choice of a wide variety of Family and kid oriented dogs ....

Lab, Irish Setter, so forth, maybe a smaller dog, depends (personally, I wouldn't want a small dog, but thats just me).
The little Yappers, drive me nuts ...

So I guess if he gets a dog that is not a Violent dog, I don't have a problem with it, of course, just to be sure, he should have visits from the correct animal behavior people once a month or so for the first year or two ..... if they find no problems over the course of 2 years, then, fine, let him go and do his own thing.

This is all so idiotic. I’m not a big Vick fan, but I’m looking at the bigger picture. People will protest Vick until to the day he dies about this nonsense, but how many athletes, movie stars, politicians and regular ole Joes get off with less after murdering another HUMAN. A couple years ago Marshawn Lynch was involved in a hit and run involving another HUMAN, and there were no protests. I’m not saying go out and beat animals here, but comes on, let’s focus on crimes against humans first after we get that squared away, we can focus on dogs and cats and hamsters and earthworms, but until then any crime against another human is about a million more times serious then the most brutal crime against any animal.

I still can’t believe Vick did time for this in a country when you can plead a murder case down to a parking ticket. This whole situation shows just how F’d up the justice system in the country is and how warped peoples mindsets are that they value the life of some animal over that of another human being. I’m hoping for the Eagles to win the Super Bowl and have Vick smiling and he holds the Lombardi Trophy to give the ultimate middle finger to all those that are ‘outraged’.
