DVR use with Directv

Is there a dvr that can be used with directv without USING directv equipment?

There are older DVRs that will work (including a Tivo based HD DVR) but none of them are capable of picking up D*'s MPEG4 HD channels. There are only a few HD channels available that aren't MPEG4 but they will be phased out soon.
