To all the Satellite gurus out there: I have been on the look for a decent deal on a decent FTA receiver. I came across this seller (authorized Dealer, as he claims) on ebay with what looks to me as a good deal on a Fortec Ultra with some extras.
Here is the URL: . . Sorry but the system wouldn't let me post a URL because I am a new memeber, but here is the item number on ebay: 5785179175
I don't have any FTA setup yet but I am working on it.
Looking forward to your advice.
Thanks in advance :up

Welcome :wave

Looks like a good deal. I haven’t worked with them but I think their feedback speak for themselves.

(I have thought about getting the same one) :D

Thanks

Thanks Iceberg,
Is there any way to ensure it's an authentic receiver and not a cheap immitation. The guy swears he's an authorized dealer.

it looks authentic to me.....the feedback speaks for itself

Looks like all this guy does is satellite

You might think about giving Mr. Sadoun (who also is a sponsor of this site) a shot at your business. He was around long before most of these dealers popped up and I'm sure he'll be around after alot of them are gone.

I am a newbie too and have been reading alot about various receivers. The only thing you might want to ask if it is the 2005 model. I read that it has the latest firmware and a couple of fixes (something about the remote). Sadoun does have the newest version. If I am in error here someone jump in please.

Make sure you pay via credit card.
If/when things go wrong it's impossible to get PayPal to do anything about it.

Better still, find a reputable retailer.
The few dollars you'll save right now adds up later if something's not right.

Although I have never had any issues getting PayPal to credit me back when the need arose, I also would spend up to $20 more including shipping to NOT buy from eBay. Just email the ebayer asking for a clear photo of the serial number and/or version number sticker (will include the manufacture date) on the back and see how or if he replies. If you get some grief or excuses about doing it, then move on. Sellers not willing to provide extra info are usually trying to hide something no matter how small. I bought my Fortec Lifetime Ultra off of eBay without an issue and if I can find the seller's name I will post it. It is also VERY EASY to upgrade the official Fortec firmware if you have to.

I know it's easy to upgrade firmware, but for someone new it is one more thing to think about. Here is the information about the 2005 model upgrade from a post early this year:
--------
Heads up ..... A new shipment of the 2005 design is now available. Aside from the IR issue, many computers were having RS232 communication port issues with the last version. STB Editor and Uploader 3.31 work flawlessly!

The new shipment has eliminated the issues of IR problem, RS-232 communication (original pre 12-2004 motherboard, the RS 232 attached to the rear panel of the case. The "White Box" version includes English, Spanish and French manuals, remote with batteries, AV cables. You can identify these new receivers by the Feb. 2005 sticker and the IF input has been changed to SAT INPUT. The quality of the new shipment is above anything that we have previously seen!

The entire thread is under "Equipment Reviews" section.

Contacted seller

I have just sent the seller a question re: manuf. year and whether he can send me a picture of the back of the receiver. I will see what he says and will let you know.
Thanks for all your thoughtful responses. :D
