I just got a HR22. My old R15 ran about 123-127. The HR22 runs around 105-108.
I put it on the exact same shelf as the R15.
Have they improved the cooling systems on these things? I thought the HD boxes would run alot hotter.

I believe your HR22 is a HR22-100.If it is there should not be a fan in the back.I have the R22-100 the fan is inside next to the Hard Drive plus has different ventilation compared to other models. My temps run the same.:)

when is someone going to do a review on this dvr? like take it apart , snap some pics. so on. :(

OK Rey, here you go:

HR21-100 with bigger hard drive.

No other changes - really.
HR22-100.

Sorry, couldn't resist :D

As soon as my warranty is up, I plan to open it up and get some images. BTW, I don't believe the HR22 has a fan. I have heard that is was specifically designed to run much cooler than the HR20/HR21's. It does-but I have no way to measure the case temp. In fact, it doe not have any vents in the upper case surface and still runs probably 15-20 degrees cooler than the older units.

Opening up a leased receiver is never a good idea.

Don't bet on it. All DIRECTV DVRs have at least one fan.

This is likely a matter of the thermostatic fan being turned down and a further reduced power requirement through more efficient design.

I couldn't hear a thing in my 22. My old motorola DVR had a pretty loud fan in my entertainment center to where I added some cushioning underneath to stop it from vibrating the stand. The 22 is dead silent. I'm not saying it's not in there, I just can't hear it. My temp has run 106-107, which seems ok to me.
