Correct, I would never disagree with this, hence the addition of 20+ channels to the masses.
That is what I am saying. This thread is about second guessing something that we do not have all the info on.
I am almost 100% positive that Dish had to notify Voom of some sort of conditions of a drop dead date, hence the midnight removal.
Voom didn't comply with whatever Dish wanted.
Dish most likely couldn't notify the world about this legally.
Thats all I am trying to say.
I agree, I'm sure there are other reasons, probably legal, why they did not give some sort of notice before removing the channels.
Dish can not always explain everything to us. I know we feel like we deserve the inside information, but it just doesn't work like that with such a huge public corporation.
I'm sure the view of many people on this board would be a little different if Scott had posted a day or two ahead of time that they were going to end up removing Voom because of the lawsuit. He did provide the info, just not the result and timing.
Look, I'm just as disappointed that I did get to see a repeat of all the shows at least one more time before they removed the channels. But in the end... this is a part of business. It really was written all over the wall, and many people were already speculating they were going to be removed. I blame Voom just as mch as Dish.
Actually.. it's more Voom's fault than Dish's.
It could be worse, we could be without the Voom channels, AND still waiting for Dish to add more HD. at least they did add the 20 HD channels first.
Imagine the outcry if they didn't.
I think we are fairly certain they will be adding more HD once they remove the VOOM channels from the sats.... though that could be sometime... depending how long the lawsuit/appeal takes. I'm they will leave them uplinked to be safe.

I'm not saying they should or should not have dumbed Voom; they must do what they think is best for their business. I just think they handled it poorly.
Again...... you are assuming that they could have handled it differently.... we do not know this... their hands may have been tied on how to proceed once they made the decision to do so.
Exactly. Voom is HD...what was added yesterday is HD-lite.
I would like to see an evaluation of the amount of actual HD content on Dish before the addition yesterday, after the addition of the "22 channels", and after the subtraction of the Voom channels.
Using this reasoning, E* should not have added Smithsonian or MGM. Most people dont know about those channels either, and would mean that no start-ups should ever launch again...
maybe they shouldnt have botched their last satellite launch. I know it wasnt their fault but this is simply the knee jerk stop gap measure they have employed no matter how much they deny it. And reruns are just an excuse. All of the networks rerun. Vooms channels are no more guilty than many of the other networks.
You have a point none of know the legalities involved or for that matter the real reason they took the channels down.
I bet the other networks don't have a contract stipulating they must spend a certain amount of money to update their content like Voom did though. This is not something that just happened over night. I'm sure Voom was notified months ago that DISH wasn't happy with their lack of programming efforts. Who really knows what was going on behind the scenes. VOOM could have been just as stubborn.
In the end, it falls down to VOOM. They just were not producing the content needed.
In my opinion, they were stretched too far and did too little too late. Dish had to take action... the numbers show it. Everyone wanted more HD, and were demanding the Higher Profile channels that they are familiar with. Direct had them, DISH didn't. It seems they made a decision to go with those channels whether they had the HD content or not, because it was a perception from the consumers.
At this point, DISH doesn't have a whole lot of choice, they are getting pounced by DirecTV, and they have to make bold moves now. From the sounds of it, Charlie was eating crow today as he was giving DirecTV ALOT of credit. He noted that DirecTV is hitting on all cylinders right now. Dish has to do alot to catch up with them. He said adding the 22 HD channels made them competitive... (but didn't say much about what it did for their competitiveness when they removed the Voom!) He did say though that they were Very competitive with cable.
I can't think of too many cable/satellite channels that rerun material to the extent that VOOM does. i don't like the move or how it was handled but VOOM produced very little new material. Ironically the news channel that was dropped probably had a higher 5 of new material each month than the ones that were kept.

There will always be exceptions, but I stand by my initial post about the masses. Certainly Smithsonian and MGM aren't "broad appeal" channels, but at least they're financial viable and seem to be backed by people who want to keep the channels on the forward edge of things...that cannot be said about VOOM.
I think you are giving MGM and Smithsonia too much credit. According to some post from DirecTv folks, both of these channels will fall into the repetitive nature. We think they are cool now because they are brand new to us, dish subs. But wait a month or two and we will know the real programming nature of both of these. I suspect that they will be in the same boat as other channels in the repeat department.
