I am in the process of moving, and I am planning to switch to Direct tv w/ tivo (maybe HD) and also pick up the sunday ticket programming. At the same time, I am trying to eliminate my land-line telephone and switch to VoiP (Vonage).

I was told by direct tv that I need a land-line in order to obtain the ppv programming and sports packages (sunday ticket). They claim this is not only to order ppv, but also the sunday ticket requires a land-line due to blackout restrictions.

Is this true? How can I get around this without suffering through unreliable service (either satellite or phone). Thanks for helping a newcomer.

Short answer No.

Long Answer: Technically all DirecTV receivers require a land-based phone line connection. Realistically the one time you have have one is to activate service on a new DVR or to order PPV from your box. You should not let DirecTV know that any of your receivers are not connected to a phone line.
