Hi,

I finally decided to upgrade to HD service (from my old Hughes Directivo) and now am the proud non-"owner" of an HR24. Anyway, I get the distant networks from NYC, as I have no locals and have had waivers for a long time.

When I called to get the HD upgrade, I was told I would receive those distant networks in HD. Well, I still get them in SD.

I called to ask what happened, and after a long run around, was finally told that the "FCC does not allow us to broadcast those networks to you in HD". I asked if I could get another waiver and was told the same thing again. My interpretation of her somewhat vague response is that the FCC has not yet allowed Directv to broadcast the NYC network HD stations to subscribers outside of the NYC local area, even if they have waivers for the distant networks. Annoyingly, when I posed the question to her that way, she again repeated the sentence as above. But CSR is another issue.

So is it true? Is it not possible to get distant network service in HD? If it is possible, what do I need to do to make it happen?

I thoguht the rule was pretty simple

If locals are available in your market you can't get distants
If HD locals are not available you **might** qualify for HD distants

There is a website that you can enter your address on and see what you qualify for
Enter Address

and when I put in a addy that doesnt get locals on D* I get this
Where DIRECTV does not offer local channels, SD and/or HD DNS may be requested but additional validation is required and your local station may need to grant a waiver before service is added. Click Continue to request service.

So, I don't have any locals where I live (22903), so obvoiusly no SD locals and no HD locals. There are no published plans to add locals to my market (per all the D* CSR). I already have a wiaver to receive the SD distants (and have had that waiver for years).

Since I already have waivers for SD distants, do I then need to get a waiver for HD distants? If I go through that link, am I klikely to have my SD distants re-evaulated? I don't want to loose what I already have. It is painful to ask the D* CSR's this. I had to go through 2 CSR to even get someone to understand my question, and then I seem to have gottenfaulty info anyway.

since you have waivers I seriously would be leery....the stations could always yank them if D* sends a new one

WPIX and WWOR are only on CONUS in SD...the HD versions are on spotbeam

I dont think D* will offer them for all. They do offer a CW for markets without one (CW DC50)

What channel numbers are you trying to get the NYC DNS networks?

The 380s are SD and the 390s are HD.

Well, actually you have a point. I was looking in the 380's. OTOH, when I put the guide into "HD Only" the networks don't show up. I'll have to double check when I get home.

If I can't get the DNS in HD, I might just have to move:cool:

If you have waivers you should be able to get DNS from both new york and La in SD and one of them in HD depending where you live

So how do I do that? Apparently it is not automatic (I checked and I do not get the 390's). I have already spoken to 2 CSR's, one who didn't have a clue to what I was talking about and one who has already told me it is impossible. Do I risk blowing my waivers?

I don't believe your allowed to have BOTH anymore (unless your grandfathered already)

What satellite are WPIX and WWOR on CONUS in SD? I could only find them on spotbeam.

Do you still need HD waivers separate from SD ?

Yea, I want to know that too. And how do I do it without jeopardizing my current waivers? It's not that I want SD and HD, just I don't want to loose my SD waiver if the HD waivers are shot down (the whole waiver thing is a crapshoot to some extend).

And if I call D*, is there a particular department I ask for? As I have mentioned, I have spoken to 2 CSR's (one 1st line CSR and one in "Technical service") and both were clueless. Or is there some D*-speak that I can use so they'll know what I'm talking about? I used the words "DNS service" and "distant networks" and the CSRs would just say over and over that there are no locals in my area (yea, I know:rant:)

I was speaking of Dish Network. I think there was some confusion as we were talking about both services

On DIrectv WPIX & WWOR are on spotbeam
