Dish/Tribune Dispute

It will be the ABC and CW here in the New Orleans market. Dish added a channel 1 number below the affected channel with a slate saying ""We have accepted Tribune Broadcasting Company’s offer to extend the agreement for their stations in order to continue to negotiate. We do not understand why Tribune is threatening to blackout their stations at this point."

The message is reworded slightly here but it is there. As always it is hard to know who to believe.

Where is the limit? Are viewers going to continue to pay more and more to get locals? With so many options for programming out there, people can chose. Like losing HBO. We have survived and those that wanted HBO jumped ship or streamed it. The programmers want way too much. No wonder so many started streaming going to Sling, Philo, and others.

Too many disputes to keep track of. I get 54 channels OTA, a whole slew of others on my Ku dishes, a buttload of channels from YTTV and a bunch of movies on Netflix. Still not missing Dish. Not trying to rub salt in the wound, just sayin' there are other options for most people unless you are in an extremely remote area.

There is no mention of Tribune on the DishPromise.com page...
Hey NYDutch. Thanks for bringing this up! I did take a look, and I was able to see the Tribune pre-take down on DISH Promise. I do want to make sure we have that information available to all! Is there a specific area that you're inputting that isn't bringing that up? -Caleb S

On edit, my apologies, I forgot the Tribune negotiation isn't nationwide, and only affects specific locals.

When I go to DISH Promise | MyDISH | DISH Customer Support all I'm seeing is the FSN take down info.

It's great having the DISH Support team back here!

Oh, I understand now! Since the Tribune pre-takedown, with the exception of WGNA, is region based, the information will only be available after inputting an impacted zip code. I do think it would be beneficial to have at least WGNA listed; however, since we have accepted WGNA’s offer to extend the agreement for their stations in order to continue to negotiate, it's likely that's why it's not mentioned quite yet. Either way, I will forward your feedback to the team in charge! Thanks for pointing this out! - Caleb S

I so wish DISH would publicize the actual rates and the actual increases being proposed and the total impact these increases directly have on the customer, and then do it across all channels. And show us all what we would pay IF DISH caved. Basically negotiating in the open.

But I know there are contractual provisions that deny this info in the public domain.

I also wish customers could buy local channels individually....then if a customer deems the increase for a particular station worth it them he can decide on his own.

Regarding sports, I already dropped all sports from my flex pack. With Disney planning to bundle Disney Plus with ESPN Plus, that's my aim for addressing sports. Right now I listen to local games on the radio while I work around the house.

I still don't see dropping Dish as the means of resolving all these channels being pulled. Although annoying, I find Dish fighting these disputes to be necessary to not price common people out of satellite/cable television.

Take a look at what ESPN Plus offers. Without the linear channels, and they aren't there, it is less than comprehensive.

They will never do that because what this amounts to is pennies.

They are going to raise the rates next year another $3-5 regardless the outcome of this dispute. Never have I seen a provider say they are not raising rates due to holding out during a dispute.

What ever money they save negotiating a better rate goes right to dish networks bottom line.

If the difference here was let’s say 50 cents. Most customers would say they would gladly pay the 50 cents to have their channels back.

The problem is Dish is already raising your rates $5 next year. If they can negotiate an increase to 25 cents for example, they just saved 25 cents per month over 12 million subscribers which comes to 36 million dollars.

Meanwhile the customer puts up with them loosing their channel for several weeks.

And you see the loyalty credits and customer cancellations. As long as the back lash does not cost them 36 million or whatever the potential savings are Dish wins
