DISH Reaches Long Term Agreement with DISNEY / ESPN / ABC

Dish should just do away with Auto Hop and be done with it. It's a nice feature but it isn't worth the drama and increased costs it will no doubt cause, it's simple enough to skip the commercials with FF/Skip. The monthly cost increases for the hopper are probably due in most part to the increases Dish will most certainly end up paying the Networks as contracts are renewed.

Dish Network and Disney to kiss and makeup over Auto Hop

Dish Network may soon be free of the burden of at least one of the many legal entanglements concerning its controversial Auto Hop feature. According to Bloomberg news, unnamed sources have disclosed that Dish is close to a settlement with Disney over the issue, which could net Disney an extra half a billion dollars annually by 2015 thanks to higher re-transmission fees....

If there is any merit to that extra half a billion dollars, then just wait till Fox,Cbs,and Nbc contracts come up for renewal.Dish can't just keep shelling out money like this. Many more of these double digit increases including equipment is going to lose them more subs than it's worth imo.

Two problems:
1) it assumes that networks will sell only the HD version of the channel. I have yet to see any evidence of this.
2) swapping everyone to at least a 211 will cost $$$$$. Dish has shown that they would rather delay an mpeg4 transition to keep those costs down. Probably a mistake since the bandwidth could allow them to add more networks and make them more competitive.

That's my stance. Cough up the dough now and earn more down the road. Remember, their HD customers are probably willing to spend more in subscription fees than the SD customer. As for the networks, that's just extortion.

If Dish gets the Longhorn Network and the ACC Network, they'll both probably be in the multisport package, with regional access to ACC states and Texas, but the SEC Network will be available with the other ESPN networks in the lower tiers... and there is what is wrong with both ESPN and College Football in one statement. Heck they could just change the call letters of ESPN to the SEC Network since it already feels that way.

Half a billion is way too high for just Dish alone... Perhaps it is if other providers follow with the same thing and agree to pay more. Half a billion over 14 million subs would be $3/sub/month if it was only Dish. This would be with all 14 million subs not just those with the Hopper.

The networks used to have a larger audience and could charge more (in inflation adjusted terms) for their commercials. Now with cable getting a large slice of the ad dollars, the networks are supplementing their income with re transmission fees.

Yabbut the networks also have a big stake in a lot of the cable channels too don't they?

in Dish Mexico, the new HD channels additions are this:
Disney Channel HD
ESPN 3 HD
This are obviously the latino versions..
starting February 15th
but I think that dish Mexico dont have any relationship with dish in usa. (speaking of deals/agreements) :p

sorry for my English,

Dish has invested too much into this.

Look at it this way, when Supreme Court rules on Aereo and upholds it, the game is over on local channels. Everyone will jump on the bandwagon and the model for paying for local stations is over and done.

My belief is that they will not get rid of Auto Hop, but instead cut a deal where Dish subs get Watch ABC day after content and that's how they deal with it.

Aereo is very small

I think PortlandChris is onto something here. If Aereo wins in court, there would be no reason for Dish or DirecTV to continue paying hundreds of millions of $s (or whatever the figure is) when instead they could use Aereo tech to supply locals over the net. No carriage fees! The second shoe to drop is Dish and DirecTV would no longer need spotbeam satellites to deliver locals. 4KTV anyone?

What makes you think the Supreme Court will make aero legal?
