DISH Price Increases

Sports certainly is a big reason, but in homes with multiple TVs, streaming isn't all it is cracked up to be either. And it certainly isn't more convenient.

It's not any less convenient for me. I use the same Tivo Roamio and Tivo Mini whether I'm watching something from cable, Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, or MLB.tv.

I can even use One Passes to put seasons of Jessica Jones from Netflix or The Man In High Castle from Amazon Prime in the same "my shows" list as my DVR recordings. The Tivo search goes through all of the services I subscribe to whether that's cable or streaming so it is incredibly convenient for me.

If you are a streaming only person it's not like it's that hard to simply replace your satellite receiver with a Roku or Apple TV. I don't really see those streaming boxes as any harder to use than a Hopper.

As for the price hikes - are they flipping nuts!?!? NO way in hell I'm going to pay that much in a rate hike! They are asking for $3 for each of my hoppers that is $6 + $5 for my package.

There is no rate increase on the Hoppers, the new hardware pricing is for new customers only.

I've got a TiVo Roamio and do use the OnePass to 'schedule' the streaming shows also. It is very convenient and would be a lot more so if Hulu could be done the same way. But Hulu and OnePass don't work together since about the 21st of October. TiVo could be better about it if they had more streaming services available but since the OEM market is where their potential growth is, I don't expect that to happen. Unfortunately nothing else offers quite the flexibility with the 'how' of 'scheduling' as well as TiVo does though Playon is getting close and covers many more 'channels'.

But I wouldn't want to be streaming only regardless how good the equipment is. I would lose live boxing, and there are some things that just aren't available except as episode or series purchases.

There are several different types of accounts (Directv)

Business Viewing - Doctors offices, Auto repair Centers, small offices. Programming is shown to customers. Key here is no movie channels

Private Viewing - Same is business viewing, but in a back office where customers will not be viewing it. Movie Channels are allowed.

Public Viewing - Bars, Resturants, any place that serves food or drink.

MDU Lite - Apartment building less than 20 units that is wired for Directv. 1 Dish, each resident gets their own bill

MDU - Apartment building 1 Dish, the apartment management pays for part of the customers Directv bill such as purchasing a basic package, customers pay for extras like HBO.

L&I (Lodging and institutions) - Hotels, Hospitals, nursing homes. Programming is bill out per room, or in some cases per TV. Also referred as to bulk accounts.

The same applies for Dish, but they do not have a true private viewing with movie channels

Right but I heard from a buddy that works with Dish still saying new hopper has 12 tuners...ok so no brainer to upgrade however its releasing in March. So you get existing hardware fee yet if you upgrade you go up to $15 each. Pretty dirty if I say so... but they may bend on that if you are out of contract and threaten to leave.

Sports are also the only reason many people still have cable/satellite. Everything else can easily be streamed through the internet. Local blackouts on streaming services like MLB.tv make that tough for the average person. Location spoofing services make it possible to get around the blackouts. I did it for 2 years as a cord cutter and MLB.tv premium subscriber but the average person won't know how to do that.

I agree that sports channels are one of the primary reasons cable/satellite prices have gone up. It's hard to cut them off when they are one of the last things cable/satellite providers have to hold over potential cord cutters' heads though.

They are in tough situation. Cut off ESPN, FS1, NFL Network, MLB Network, RSNs, etc and people who were only staying because live sports are hard to stream will leave. Don't cut them off and people who are sick of the price continuing to go up will leave.

With this current hike it looks like I will be downgrading my parents Dish account from AT120+ to AT120 at least until baseball season. They were AT 250 customers for years but they have been downgrading around this time every year lately.

I'm currently in a double play promo with Charter but the promo pricing is set to expire in a couple months. If they won't extend it again I'll be going back to OTA and streaming because cable/satellite is just not worth the amount of money these companies charge to me anymore.

Everything else can't be streamed reliably if you live out of the reach of high speed internet, or have a low metered service like Exede or AT&T/Verizon at home LTE. I can do "pretty" good on streaming with my 4 Mbps DSL, but I wouldn't want to rely on it exclusively.

IMHO $15 a month for a 12 tuner Hopper would be a great deal!

If it does indeed have 12 tuners (which I highly doubt, but hope you prove me wrong) it would save me money. I have 4 HWS and two Joeys, if that is true I could go down to one Hopper 3 and replace the other 3 Hoppers with Joeys.

I would reduce down to two HWSs and an additional Joey. I just like to have that second Hopper for a back up if one Hopper fails.

Well yeah I mean it would and you could drop a hopper and go with a joey to save money so long as the HDD was enlarged to compensate for the loss of space dropping a hopper. Now if its 4K enabled too...yeah no brainer.

I think that there may be some misunderstanding as to what "Public/Private" means. I suspect that the term only applies to MDU accounts.

Since a new residential AT250 subscription is more or less the same as an AEP subscription during the three month honeymoon, they will indeed offer AEP to newer subscribers, just not at the point of sale.

That makes sense. So as a residential customer whether it is grandfathered (keep the package whether it is offered new or not) I'm still looking at an $8 increase, potential $12 increase down the line if equipment grandfathering goes away and forfeiting $12 decrease for the movie channels. $8 real impact now plus possible additional $24 impact down the line. Wow.

Right, it's not for everyone. People outside of high population areas might not be able to reliably stream. However, those people aren't going to be the major factor when Dish and other companies are deciding whether or not to keep the sports channels around. Most Americans don't live in rural areas so the needs of those who do are less important to a giant corporation trying to make these decisions.

Some day rural customers might make up the bulk of Dish's customer base if people who live in broadband areas continue to switch to streaming though.

Just called for the first two of my return boxes. This has been a while coming, as I have said here before, so it is time. This will keep me with the HWS and probably the welcome pack to ride out the last four months of contract and give the family a sufficient buffer time to catch up on the dvr content and adjust to a more stream oriented viewing experience.

As most larger "sites" don't need DPP (a technology useful primarily for DVRs now), I'm not sure the DPP44 is all that popular in that space; especially now that the ViP222 is more difficult to come by.

Of course Claude's exit probably predates the paucity of ViP222s and 322s.

I wouldn't get too wrapped up in hypothetical increases. Dish is likely grandfathering to help deal with churn. The $24 is to keep you from trying to game each provider against each other every two years. Of which I'd like to say is a good policy. Helps the moochers pay more and maybe reduce price increases for stable subs.

I got over 150 movies on my ext HD. I am dropping to the Welcome Pack and watch 150 movies and then switch to Netflix for $10 per month.

And I'm getting one. I'll gladly resign a commitment, and maybe even put out a little money for it.
Even if the fees are $30 for it, it's still better value the 2 Hoppers now.
