DISH Price Increase 1/17/2013 (UPDATED!)

I want to confirm 3 things:

1. The Protection Plan remains at $7

2. BB@H remains at $10

3. Those of us grandfathered with no locals will continue to pay $5 less per plan. In my case, $69.99 rather than $74.99 for the 250 plan. IOW the no-locals grandfathering will continue.

Only if you have DIRECTV's season ticket can you hope to try to see/record them all. For most it is just the Monday night football and Thursday that could be interesting only carried on cable.
except for the cities/markets where the teams are from

I sure hope Scott can dig up some details of exactly how the price protection works, and if everyone qualifies.

Supposedly DISH will be a bit more candid in the next week. If they have been trying not to avoida public statement I doubt that they would talk to Scott or anyone here until they are ready.

Since the price hike is about ready to go into effect, they should be ready to give details.

I thought there were mandates that service providers must give their customer base direct advanced notification when increasing prices?

Verizon increased my bill, then emailed me about it after I saw the increase on my bill .. two months later I get a letter from them apologizing and crediting my account the increase for the past two months plus another credit to cover the next 30 days. Apparently there was a notice on the bill that the price was going up, but I was on auto-pay and never really scrutinize over my statement as long as the charges are correct.

T-Mobile increased my bill without saying anything at all. AT&T kept increasing my Internet bill almost on a monthly basis without a word at all. Needless to say I got slightly elevated blood pressure and they are not doing business with me anymore...

Sorry, I got my terminology mixed up. Yes, I am currently out of commitment and was wondering if I chose the upgrade my equipment and sign up for another 2 year commitment, would I save anything. Based on what I am seeing for the prices of the Hopper/Joey, I think it would increase my monthly bill by even more.

I currently have:
International Programming - $54.99 (increased from $49.99 in mid-2012)
DishAmerica Silver - $49.99 (will increase to $54.99 this month?)
DVR Service - $6.00

I have the VIP 722k which is connected to one HD TV and one SD TV.

Hopper/Joey will make sense when you upgrade that second TV to HD. You will have an additional box fee to connect HD to it and the $4 for whole home will give you benefits that you wouldn't get with a 211.

Yea used to you would be notified on the previous months bill about upcoming increases.AT&T stopped doing that they just slap a $2 hike on and hope no one complains.Certainly hope Dish doesn't start the same practice.

that is one of the few things we all agree on. The disagreemet concerns how the price protection kicks in.

Well what I said is correct but the price protection stuff clouds it up. Technically the new price and promos start then but many people will not see the increase on their bills for a while. I guess it's best I just wait until tomorrow and watch Dish's retailer chat from CES. I may know more details then.

I hope they alleviatet he confusion they created in the last communication to retailers. Thanks in advance for at least trying to get to the bottom of it.

If I were to pay in advance for one year of programming before 1/17 would I still get the old price?

Thanks.

Paying a year in advance would not make the old price stay as it is now. The price change will still kick in. Only new customers who signed up before 1/17 for a specific price who are still in their introductory year would be protected but will also have to adjust to the new price once their promised introductory price is up.

We should look into our contracts and check if they disclosed that prices can go up without prior notice. This will help us determine if we will have to expect a notification or not. Some states have a law that advance notifications should be sent though, but not all of course. So digging up for that contract would really tell what to expect.

The contracts that customers sign up for actually tells if prices are subject to change anytime without notice. the Dish website actually have copies of the contracts and agreements for their customers. Check it out at Mydish.com at the very bottom of the page you'll find the link "Legal". You just have to know which type of plan you have.

Those contracts have Dish protected pretty well. It would be dumb on their part if they didn't since things can be unpredictable in this business.

Uhhh, yea I know about the fine print. My point is that they used to always notify customers in advance of upcoming rate increases. Now it seems to be a thing of the past. You could count on notices around Jan,or Feb.While I understand they aren't required to do it,it would be very nice of them if they did.Think it would also reduce customers calling in to complain.
