Dish Pan Swap

I was eyeballing my extra 500 the other day and my 1000 and thought nah...but good idea! if I was not using my D* Phase III, i would try swapping it with the 1000 reflector or pan and see what happened...(should be same bolt pattern should it not?)
Looks like the same to me. But I heard, that the D* Phase III is smaller than the D1000. It's like 18"x20". and the 1000 is like 19"x21". Not sure.

What really makes no sense, the dish 500 won't allow the 21 switch to accept 129. I never knew this

At the time it didn't (again..this was long before they put stuff on 129). All that was on there was the D1000 congrats screen and they were "testing" a few locals on there. I don't know if this has changed or not

so use the SD for 129 only? Heck yeah it would work. People are doing that on the west coast. using 30" dishes to get 129 stable :)

a Phase III won't work like a D1000 due to the LNB's being goofy

The only one to use is the far right one (when you are behind the dish) that is at 101...that MIGHT work

I am curious if the Phase III reflector is capable of picking up 110, 119, and 129 as well. I would think that it would at least work for 110, 119 or 119, 129. It would just be a matter of getting the lnbf on the arm. Someone should make an adapter for the different types of dishes. One can get a Phase III dish/reflector cheaper than a Dish 500.

I will try, too hot and bright on that side of house to set up my little tv and an old receiver... IF it works good I will dedicate the Phase III to 129 freeing up my Dish 1000 for Camping use as right now I use the 1000 for 129, my old 500 for 119/110 and a single 300 for 148 with the dpp44 switch. I am going to try the reverse too, the Phase III arm on the Dish 500 and see what happens with my D* signals...

Well I tried and put the D500 reflector on the D1000 (swapped), and it sucks! ALL three satellites had mid 50's signal! And I don't think that it needed reaimed after that. I wonder if the Winegard 30" dish has the same bolt pattern and could swap that for the D1000 reflector? Ice you have one. Could you tell if the pattern looks like it would fit?

The D500 would have a different skew and elevation than the D1000 since you are picking up an additional slot. The only dish that would have the same elevation as the D1000 would the the D300 since the middle slot (main focus onto the center of the reflector) would be 119.

Winegard has a totally different bolt setup and you just can't slap a new pan on the existing mount. Each dish has a specific focal point and changing pans will usually make it worse :)

I tried to put a 24" pan on a Dish500 and it didnt work :)

Went out to my old camper taking a non subbed Phillips D* SD receiver, a Echostar 2700 non subbed receiver and a Phase III dish I acquired today. Dish 500 already beside camper. (camper has 20" Apex SD flatscreen TV, a refridgerated A/C and an Icebox stocked with cold beverages...temp when I entered camper 106.5) I left Dish 500 arm set on 110/119 when I put the Phase III on and had marks from the Phase III arm...

attachment 1) Dish 500 arm on Phase III dish (hint, do not use duct tape to try to attach extra LNB for 129 :D )
attachment 2) Results from switch check on Echostar 2700 receiver
attachment 3) Dish 500 rotated 90 degrees and placed over the Phase III / Dish 500 hybrid ( No Signal when I did this)
attachment 4)Congrats you have a Dish 500 ( Not!)
attachment 5)Installation/ point dish screen on Phillips D* receiver, I was only able to get sat A with both dishes with the Phase III 80 (not messing with elevation on dish, just cranking the camper jack up and down )as you can see with the Dish 500 a 90 ( fluctuated between 87 and 92)
attachment 7) Dish 500/ Phase III hybrid
Did not tweak too much as it is around 100 degrees out there :) the holes are not exact matches, but they usually are not either on supposedly matchable components. The Dish 500 rotated 90 degrees is slightly bigger and might add some gain in signal if the holes could be drilled and it could be shimmed right.

I tried that too, rotating the D500 pan 90 degrees, and I didn't get no signal either. I didn't expect that focal point thing having to be THAT precise. Well I thought I give this a try, because if it had worked and the signal was improved with this mod, or at least about same signal and less sensitive to rain fade, then this would have been a REAL simple improvement, as you only had to swap the pan, and NOT the whole Dish with re-aiming and all that jazz. Still don't know why Ice's simple slapping on a dual to the side of a D500 worked at all. My old D500 had about the same signals on 119/110, but only dropped a few points in even the heaviest rain. The new D1000 can be having the same signal in the sunhine, and when it rains...BOOM...down the signal goes 10-20 points right away. This dish really sux in the rain, not just on 129.
