Easier, simpler way to refer to DIsh Network receivers effective February 1, 2006. Dish Network will refer to their receivers in the following way...

Dish 311/811 Standard receiver single-tuner
Dish 322 Standard receiver dual-tuner
Dish 522/625 DVR receiver dual-tuner
Dish 411/ViP211 HD receiver single-tuner
ViP622 HD DVR receiver dual-tuner

Notice that the 411 is not refered to as the ViP411 since it does not have the ethernet port but is still under the same classification.

The 811 is a "standard" receiver? It's not classified as HD?

Nope because it cannot be activated as MPEG-4 next month. There was no mention of the other receivers. Maybe this is an indication of which receivers will get swapped first to MPEG-4?

So I guess the new names mean standard=MPEG2 and HD=MPEG4.

Actually, if one does not want to pay for that $20/mo extra for one of the metallic HD packs and just wants local HD ota and or HBO-HD and or SHO-HD to go along with their SD only AT or DL or a la carte packs, one of those 811s or DVR942s or a used 921, may be a good economical way to go.

A used 921 may be economical, but so is a used Pinto. I think they both kind of run sone of the time :)

MPEG-2 HD receivers are not supposed to get any HD channels if they are activated Feb 1st or after. Are the premium movie HD channels the exception if you order the movie packages? If you cannot get those then the 811 would only be worth the same as a 311 maybe slightly more since it had the OTA HD tuner.

Those that currently have an 811 or any other MPEG-2 HD receiver and are currently receiving HD programming will remain getting that same HD programming for the same price. Starting Feb 1st only MPEG-4 receivers will be >>activated<< with any HD programming.

Basically what that says is whatever investment you've got in a 6000, 811, 921 or 942 will in a sense revert back to Dish after Feb 1st. You won't pay them anything but by "disabling" your receiver for reactivation by anyone else, you loose an ability to recoup any of it's former value plus Dish picks up a receiver sale from who might otherwise have purchased your receiver.
