EchoStar Communications Corp. (ticker: DISH, exchange: NASDAQ Stock Exchange (.O)) News Release - 9/2/2005 </B></FONT>DISH Network to Aid Disaster Victims

ENGLEWOOD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 2, 2005--DISH Network has begun efforts to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina by raising money and providing satellite television service to shelters across Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.

As of today, DISH Network had set up TV service in nine shelters, including Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio, which will receive about 25,000 refugees. DISH Network is in the process of establishing service in dozens of other Red Cross and Federal Emergency Management Agency shelters.

DISH Network has also reinforced its Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi installation crews with a fleet of hundreds of vans and technicians from around the country to support the needs of DISH Network subscribers and retailers during extremely difficult circumstances. And DISH Network has found ways to make local channels available to customers in affected areas so those customers can continue to receive local news and weather reports.

"We're focused on helping ensure that DISH Network customers as well as hurricane refugees get the critical news and information they need during this devastating period," said Michael Neuman, president of EchoStar and DISH Network.

DISH Network employees across the nation have responded to the disaster by helping the Red Cross, donating time to shelters, and raising funds.

EchoStar Communications Corporation, the company that operates the DISH Network satellite TV service, has implemented a fund-raising drive for its 20,000 employees. EchoStar will match all contributions made by its employees, a program that could generate as much as $1 million if every employee donates just $25.

"We hope to raise as much money as possible for people who have been affected by this terrible tragedy. We will match every dollar that is donated by our employees in an effort to help these communities get back on their feet," said Michael Neuman, president of EchoStar.

Did this really need a sticky?

I think it's strange wording to say they're trying to help Dish Network customers AS WELL AS other refugees...Why not just say they're trying to help everyone? It just comes off strange to me that there's some difference in the eyes of whoever put out this release. Whether they're E* customers or not, they are getting free tv at the shelters...

You really think E* CSR's are going to donate any decent amount of money? C'mon...

The majority of employees at Dish will likely not donate $25 simply because their finances will not allow it (I'm sure the CSR and clerical crews are not exactly overpaid).

Dish management doesn't really think it's 20,000 employees will contribute and average of $25/head, which would be $500,000, which would be matched by the corporate office dollar for dollar, costing the company a mere $500,000, giving a total sum of $1 million.

I suspect the company is well aware that the average take from each Dish employee will be more like $10, meaning that management only has to cough up $200,000 of company money.

I always think it's clever how management ties charitable corporate giving to how much its employees can give up of their meager salaries. The company gives as little as possible from it coffers with this approach. Pretty sad.

Setting up free TV in the shelters is noble, tho.

You go, Dish! :(

I dont know exactly why people think that dish doesnt pay its employee's a decent wage but I know that as an E employee I can donate $25 and not have to wonder if I can aford to buy my kid diapers tomorrow. Dont underestimate the charitable nature of us, sure some wont donate and thats understandable for those just starting out and for others dealing with situations out of theyr control, but a large majority of us will donate the $25, Ive already bagged up about enough clothes for 5 infants wardrobes to help out the kids.

Our sister office picked up 2 tv set packages yesterday and took them to battle creek to set up at the evacuee center there and one in grand rappids. I can understand your displeasure that E is tying in its donations based on ours but atleast the company is doing something and trying to encourage its employee's to step forward as well, there are alot of companies that wont even give such an idea as donating money to charity a second thought.

Dish is doing more than my company towards matching funds. Need to bang the new HR guy on the head about that...

They did... they dedicated the whole channel to this:

DirecTV's Hurricane Channel Reunites Families

DirecTV's channel 100, devoted to hurricane relief efforts, has
had success in locating and reuniting families and friends....

and Post #5 here, by JohnH - http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=45627 - "To be fair, D* is installing systems at shelters and they have a Nationwide message channel up on the system."

That is great! There is an advantage with satellite, cable wires may be down but satellite you can put up anywhere.

After my D* CSR fiasco, I checked out Dish.
