Dish Network Corp. (DISH) founder Charlie Ergen said he may permanently drop Time Warner Inc.

Agree on TCM, not so much on Cartoon Network - used to be classics like the original Scooby Doo run and old Looney Tunes. Now its a bunch of modern stuff I can't stand.
But they are still cartoons. You may not enjoy them, but they are cartoons and they have a good deal of original material being produced from Adventure Time to Total Drama Island. Boomerang is more for the nostalgic cartoons now days.

TCM is missed, though. AMC never shows old stuff any longer and it is loaded with commercials anyways. Closest sub is the 'Retro' movie channel via BB@H. TCM had it down for the old classics and it came with our basic package. Charlie should tell Turner that everything else can go, but we will negotiate for TCM (yeah, like that would fly . . .).
MGM is okay. They do show some older stuff, but not much pre 1960. This was a bad month to miss as it is Cary Grant month on TCM. Very few actors were in so many great films. Overall, nothing can truly replace TCM, and their material is much harder to supplement.

To think these two channels are being blocked from us because of CNN and HLN is rather infuriating (granted this may also have to deal with the latest TNT/ESPN absurd NBA contract). Why should Dish have to show CNN and HLN in the first place. The channels are quantifiably garbage, with the exception of when there is something big going on and CNN can cover it.

While the cost of these channels is a very small percentage of my bill, they are the majority watched channels at my home. Turner is making a good argument for cutting the cord.

Personally, I would pay $5-7 a month for TCM. If they would make it a premium channel, I would pay for it. And I bet you that many classic movie fans would. Not sure if Turner would get enough subscribers doing this though.

And for those people, there is a solution. No one is taking away satellite.
Satellite internet? Low caps and high cost, currently anyway, make this option available only for minimal tv use. I just escaped them after 12 yrs of use. Exede is trying to get another sat up in orbit within the next couple of years, we will see what that does. When they launched Exede speed and cost went up, caps went down some.

No, that is not what I meant. Satellite TV is not going away. Just because things like OTT are now available for some doesn't mean that satellite TV is going away. It will still be around for a long time for the same reasons it started. There will be demand for it in rural areas.

I don't see why AT&T have anything to do with ESPN potential deal
if they added SECN i'm not sure why they can't renew the rest, when the time comes

It took a couple months with Dish so it'll probably be the same with Directv.
I am trying to research it myself, but with that just being broadband, how much of the country is covered by other reliable means, such as DSL? Without the full details, it seems particularly biased.

A word of advice to Turner Broadcasting: When you fight with Dish Network Chairman Charlie Ergen, use a bazooka not a pea shooter. Turner quietly noted on a website today that the satellite company’s 14 million subscribers soon might lose TNT and TBS — a contrast to CBS, which just issued a noisy call-to-arms to its fans who might see network-owned stations go dark on Dish as early as Thursday. Turner says that it also plans spots on TNT and TBS, online ads, a social media campaign, and billboards in Atlanta.
Dish hasn’t aired Turner’s other networks, including CNN, since late October. “Efforts in recent weeks to restore the Turner networks to Dish customers have been rejected at every turn by Dish leadership,” the Time Warner unit says today. “The upcoming expiration on December 5 of our carriage agreement for TNT and TBS means Dish may drop those networks as well. We remain hopeful that we will reach an agreement that restores our networks to the air and eliminates the risk of Dish removing additional Turner networks from its channel lineup.”

If dish is really seeing the viewership of Turner stations dropping it makes sense to turn off those channels. It allows Dish to identify how much demand is really there (i.e. people willing to call) vs soft demand, people that just have it on but don't really care.

Dish of course knows exactly how much demand for any channel, the set top boxes call in via phone or internet every night to report on viewing habits.

Pull them all, lets see what happens.

Turner Girds for Dec. 5 Dish Blackout of TNT, TBS http://variety.com/2014/biz/news/turner-girds-for-dec-5-dish-blackout-of-tnt-tbs-1201359484/
Time Warner’s Turner Broadcasting stepped up its publicity campaign in its ongoing rights battle with Dish Network, alerting viewers of the possible loss of TNT and TBS on the satellite-broadcast service as soon as early December.“Our efforts in recent weeks to restore the Turner networks to Dish customers have been rejected at every turn by Dish leadership,” Turner said in a statement. “The upcoming expiration on December 5 of our carriage agreement for TNT and TBS means Dish may drop those networks as well. We remain hopeful that we will reach an agreement that restores our networks to the air and eliminates the risk of Dish removing additional Turner networks from its channel lineup.”

Charlie said CNN has become irrelevant and I think he is right. CNN constantly putting out propaganda and lying to us. Charlie should just replace CNN with RT America which is free!
Not get political but earlier this week CNN got busted for reporting a story that left out key details. The result was the story changed 180 Degrees. CNN had to retract and correct.
This is NOT the first time CNN has been caught basically creating stories and presenting them as news, but are actually an editorial view of a story.
CNN is pretty much the bird crap at the foot of the totem pole when it comes to viewership and the quality and balance of their news reporting.
Time Warner should be paying providers for showing the channel. Not the other way around

The news channels think it is so important to be the first to break news that they will say whatever they hear first instead of checking facts first it seems.

I read that the other day.
That violation of the public trust is a disgrace. Any news outlet management as well as anyone in journalism that has an ounce of integrity for the craft should be furious with CNN's management for permitting this to occur.
If it were in my hands. all parties responsible would be fired on the spot.
Get off the property NOW. We will clean out your desk and ship the contents to you.

The AT&T and DTV deal gives DTV a more powerful financial position.

You're wasting your time. This point has been made repeatedly but some just don't seem to get it. If you live in a city, you have options. However, there are thousands of small towns across this country which don't have access to dependable broadband. I'm sitting in the city limits of a town of 5000 population. I have broadband which comes over the air on a line of sight from downtown. No cable or dsl is available. My speeds sometimes get up to 2 mb/s and dips to below dial-up speeds. Not reliable enough to watch TV from.

Fortunately, those of us in small towns and rural areas have other things to do besides sitting around watching TV all the time. :)
Correct. The type of area in which you live, there is a different lifestyle.
Now, I can say this. The issues begin with the influx of newcomers. Those who have left urban and suburban areas for more remote places, fail to realize that with such a move, there are trade offs. One of which is a possible lack of access to some of the conveniences of suburban lifestyle.

It is a new trend. Viacom is doing it now with Cableone since they are in dispute. If you are using Cableone internet you cannot stream from Viacom owned sites like MTV.com. So, you could be subscribed to Dish but cut off because you have Cableone as an ISP.
Yep.. it's referred to as inflicting the most pain possible so as to leverage a deal.

This is one of the pitfalls of channel bundling.
There are those who are 100% opposed to a la carte type purchasing of programming. That is until these disputes arise.

Now, you're talking.
This is an illustration of a la carte. You would be willing to buy these channels at a certain price as a premium. I agree.
However, programmers will fight this clear to the US Capitol.
The programmers want their niche channels which cost them money to produce, to be on the coat tails of their other more highly rated channels.
To the avg consumer, these niche channels are the clutter in the hallway that leads to the bedrooms in their home.
They'd just as soon find a dumpster for those items, but there is always ONE person in the house who is emotionally attached to the junk.
