Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, most people don't live in houses built today.
Perhaps you've never used, or are unfamiliar with thin clients. The Joey is a thin client.
Why not place each user's recordings in their own folder? We do this today on the 622.
It's a sliding scale, and I don't want to get too caught up in semantics.
Thin hardware, not thin software if I understand things correctly. What is thin about Joey other than lack of a drive and tuner? Other than the HD specific functions the Joey does everything on it's own and the Hopper is just a file server. If they want to change the UI they have to update the Joey, it's not under server control. When you press a key, Joey makes the decision what to do with it.
Direc's RVU is closer to a traditional thin client. Everything occurs on the server, the RVU client just handles display and relays input to the server. When you press a key the server decides what to do with it.
In PC terms, Joey is like a PC running a C/Java/VB/Whatever program accessing a SQL server database. RVU is more like an RDP or ICA client accessing a terminal server.
It should,if not then that would turn me against the Hopper and Joey.
I'm already starting to lean that way anyways considering DirecTV's HR34 has 5 tuners,before you add 2 more tuners OTA with their AM21.
Think maybe DISH dropped the ball on this one,think I'll pass.
Yes, you can add an AM21 on the HR34 and pick up 2 more tuners, but can you then record on 7 tuners? I doubt it given the way D* has done things before.
Remember the HR20 that had OTA? In spite of having 4 tuners available, it would only record on 2. And with all the other HRs, if you add the AM21 you were still limited to 2 tuners recording at once. I always thought that was a dumb design.

Too early to say that I think. We need to see how and when the OTA is implemented. I like the 5 tuner part of the HR34. I like the apparent full trick play capability and transparent aspect of Joey/Hopper. If (a big if) a second Hopper is reasonable, then six tuners would be more than enough.
Within a few months we will have a clear view of where both providers will be for the next 3 years or so and it will be time to reevaluate both. Even if Hopper delivers 100%, it may actually prompt me to move just because I won't be waiting to see what Dish has too offer.
$10 one way or the other won't make the decision. Content and which one I think I will like better sitting down in front of and navigating will.

It's a nice change compared to all of the hyperbole and schoolyard speculation.
Yeah, in some ways Hopper could be the thing that drives me to move from Dish, even if it delivers on everything. Not for any "I'm pissed it doesn't do X,Y or Z" reason, but because now we can really evaluate the next gen from both providers and make a decision.

The Joeys don't keep the favorites lists. They'll be on the Hopper. You can set up "Bill's Favorites" and he can access that list from any TV, not just the one in his room. No hard drives on the Joey's. The Joey's just serve as an interface with the Hoppers.
Oh I remember,remember I was once with D* too.It was their stupid receiver designs like the disappearing 2nd live buffer in 2 hours plus several other things,like you could not have an HDDVR without paying the extra $10. HD fee that sent me over the edge and back to DISH.
That's why I came back to DISH because even though I was SD at the time,I could have a HDDVR without the $10. extra HD fee.
Both satellite providers have their stupid decisions,it's up to us consumers to become informed so we don't signup with them and then realize we just stepped in it.
So far I have been satisfied with my 722k/wMT2.But when my commitment ends this coming next January it will be decision time again.

nope. Adding a AM21 does not give you any extra tuners
