Dish Hopper getting 5 bad reviews to 1 good review

The word for the day is: TROLLS.

Some people have axes to grind, others are PAID to post good or bad reviews. Not a good way of earning money, IMHO.

And some label any legitimate complaint about Dish Network as trolling.

On another note, Amazon is not always the most reputable site to purchase from. Counterfeit items are rampant and there are plenty of sketchy sellers.

eBay most definitely, not Amazon. Never been let down.

Are we talking legitimate complaints or just griping over nit-picky stuff? I suppose it's a matter of opinion what some people consider a legitimate complaint and in my opinion there are not a lot about the Hopper and the legitimate ones usually get acknowledged.

Most complaints I hear about are due to user error and not an actual problem with the product. Others have to do with people not doing their homework before getting something. The last usually has to do with signing up through Dish or a retailer that is not very helpful. There are a lot of customers that get taken advantage of by CSRs and sales people that push the Hopper on them when the customer is not a good fit for it.

A few days ago I was on Amazon and noticed the negative reviews about the Hopper/Joey; I was really surprised. As one who hasn't hesitated to criticize Dish before, I can tell you that the Hopper/Joey is a great system. Most of us on this forum have been with DN for a long time and the Hopper/Joey is an evolutionary upgrade. I chalk up most of the negative reviews to beginner's frustrations. After a few days with it you can begin to appreciate all the technology built in to it. I've had mine 6 months, and I'm still learning how to use new features.

Being an IT specialist, I definitely see how most people abhor change or learning different ways to do things. Switching TV providers or equipment falls into this category, and I think that's one reason for many poor reviews. Another is sales reps misstating features, like the one who told me the Hopper had 4 tuners. Also, the Primetime Anytime feature complicates things and takes a while to get used to. It should be made clear that PTA takes one of 3 total tuners. The sales rep or installer should have told me that having 3 joeys hooked to one hopper is most likely problematic in most households. That's how they set me up when I signed up for Dish (my first experience with satellite tv) 2 weeks ago, it didn't take long to realize I must have 2 Hoppers, which I now have and everybody's happy. The one thing I really don't like are the icons for shows, I've never liked icons for anything that could be a list, a text listing with more info is always preferable. Maybe the firmware is designed that way to make it easier to program for other languages. Having no prior experience with anything other than cable tv, and spending 2 weeks familiarizing with it, I really like all the features of the Hopper/Joey system. I give it *****

Never call Dish for info on signing up. All they care about is making the sale or they just simply do not know. It's best to go to a knowledgeable retailer or just come here first. It's always smart to do a little research on your own first before signing a 2 year commitment.

For a techie person this is a great dvr, others get frustrated for lack of understanding.

Oh Noes  , now I'm going to have to go into teaching mode for my wife. I've had the 722k for about 4 years, and I'm thinking of switching to the HWS for the techie in me :). She gets frustrated quickly.....but I taught her how to use the 722k, through time.

nah, my 70 year old parents picked it up quickly.

My wife went from a 722 to a HWS with no problems. She will adapt quickly on her own.

My wife is a tech IDIOT, but she picked up the Hopper with no problem.

My 4 year old boy is even able to run the DVR on the Hopper. This is where the tiles really help because he can see the tiles and knows which shows are which.

I don't mind it at all actually. I had the 922 before the Hopper so I was used to it. I'm not sure if I'd even like going back to the list since it's been so long.

Yep, and for those who are not 4 years old, we want a list view option. :)
And, as was stated early in this discussion, the lack of a list view option was a frequent complaint in the amazon user reviews. That and having grey letters on a grey background which was noted by many to be especially hard to read. I don't have trouble reading much of anything on the screen, except the episode number on the information screen.

My wife has no tech abilities and she went from 722 to Hopper to HWS no problems. In 1 year of use the biggest problem she had once was when the AVR was on the wrong setting and she had no sound, obviously not a Hopper problem. Now that she is using AutoHop she loves the new system even more. Every professional review I have seen gives it rave reviews. I have not read user reviews other than at this site and the "other" site.

That's my feeling also...well maybe not the idiot part ;)

I've been wanting to change over since the HWS came out, not really interested at this time about the Sling part, but the larger HD & faster processor ? The HD signal to all TV's is what I've been waiting for. My 722k for 4 years has been trouble free -knock on wood-. That's probably my only hesitation over switching. I had to switch out a 222k in April, but also been non-problematic.

She'll adapt :popcorn

Thanks
Steve

Another over-thinker. You will drive yourself and us crazy and probably never reach a decision.

For me I've basically looked just here @ SatelliteGuys , cause while I think this is a Dish Forum their is enough various opinions to sift through to get a good idea what I should expect.

Any issues others have had, I respect the help as fellow users give them........Can't forget DIRT also. My plans are to contact DIRT to explore my options.

I think if all the negative reviewers on amazon actually came here for insight they would have a completely different experience with their Hopper. Instead they have issues and don't get them resolved so they write up a review saying it's a piece of crap. I posted on some of the reviews and told them to visit this site. Hopefully they do and it will help them.

For me I think the hopper w/sling is good, but dont get to sucked up with their advertising. I am neither happy or dissatisfied, since I got mines off of ebay for 160 brand new. Those people who are dissatisfied and probably paid 400 dollars for it. If I paid the same price, I would be as well because I would except much more out of a $400 receiver.

Unsubscribed channel(s): shows won't play via Joey

Dish receiver fees?
