DISH Hopper coming at CES ?

So in reality is this just a dual tuner with one tuner set up to record crappy locals? If I am watching Show A downstairs and my wife is watching some awful reality show upstairs will I be able to to pause mine and swap to the 3rd tuner like I do with my 922? I love being able to swap between the 2 tuners when watching multiple games.

What about pausing on the Joey's? I was about to move to DTV because I get super good deals through work but didn't like the idea that I can't just pause on the other TVs. I have to hit record to be able to pause.

According to today's presser and demo, the Joeys have the same trick functions as the Hopper.

Outside of Primetime or if the Primetime function is not utilized, there are three satellite tuners.

I guess I'll just keep our current equipment unfortunately. Since our locals aren't provided in HD we would actually be losing a tuner by going to the Hopper/Joey route since we currently have a 722k and a 222k. I would love whole house DVR functionality but I was hoping for more from DISH on this new equipment.

This will probably fill all the needs of 97%+ of households. There are always going to be a few that need something different like OTA. For those Dish will have the ViP line.

What I don't understand is how, with only 3 tuners can 4 different rooms watch live TV. Scott, can you ask them to clarify that statement?

As an installed side the 3 tuners are probably the three ports on a 1000.2 lnbf. And since it's Dpp that's what makes up Six which is why it probably states it can record 6 channels at a time?

Okay I read that DIRECTV is charging PER tv for their fancy 5 tuner dvr . Each tv is $6.00 and the Tv has to be a Samsung tv with special software to work with the receiver. SO I can see DISH charging $6.00 - $7.00 per 110 unit or the Joey unit. Also if this 813 Xip Hopper unit has SLING built in like the 922 and the same guides, channel logos etc, I can see that this receiver will have a $10.00 Dvr fee too. So already the costs for this unit will be as high if not higher than the present system of Vip series of receivers I already have. I pay $20.00 a month in fees: for two 211k receivers + dvr software :$14.00 and the dvr fee is $6.00= $20.00. I can see for 3 extra tvs after the main one 3 X $7.00= $21.00 + the dvr /sling fee of $10.00 + $31.00 a month in fees , before programming is added in.

Like the concept of recording all the locals during primetime ,because we watch a lot of primetime shows and that is what takes up my 4 tuners(2 sat/2ota) on my 722k now. But I can see the extra fees making this out of range of my budget. But I am just speculating on the price of the fees. Knowing DISH I 'm sure it will be much higher .

Says on dish.com it's only compat with sling not loaded unfortunately.

Sent from my fingers.

I've thought about this a bit. If the Hopper came with 6 tuners plus OTA, they would obsolete all the existing hardware. I'm guessing they didn't want to do that. Three tuners won't work for many with families, but they probably could add additional ViP receivers to fill-in the gaps. For Dads or Moms that PIP between shows all the time, they are likely to be happier with a separate DVR.

Three tuners. One can be used during primetime only to record the transponder mux of the local Big 4 networks. So during primetime that's the Big 4 plus any 2 others for a total of 6 recordings. (Really it's two recorded channels and one recorded transponder mux.) Outside of primetime, it's 3 recordings.

Again I must be the oddball, I rarely use 2 tuners to record let alone 3 which I might have done once, maybe twice on a 722 since the beginning of absolute(sigh..:().

I have a daily juggling job of conflicts to resolve on my 722 with my multiple Dish Pass timers (36+) set up. So yeah, 3 tuners with no OTA tuner will likely be just as daunting.

These threads are so entertaining. My next business will be a in/out patient clinic to treat all of you TV junkies. There are many of you that need help. :D

I really need Two Hoppers. Today I have 3 DirecTV HD DVRs all networked together giving me 6 tuners. We set different shows on different DVRs, most recordings are NOT Local Prime Time shows (Youngs Kids and teenagers)

I they will let me lease Two Hoppers, and 2 Joeys I will be all set. Sign me up now!!! If they make me buy a 2nd Hopper for $300-$500 like they have done in the past, its a no go.

I have been away from Dish for about 5 years so I should count as a new customer. I really like the my prime time idea. I just need more turners.

Reading the Hopper web page, it seems like Prime Time Anytime is only for HD.

Or are they saying HD recording is not everywhere but they will record the Broadcast channels in SD if not in HD?

Prime Time Anytime is only available for locals that we broadcast in HD. If your current DMA is SD only, it will not work

Sounds like Sling is NOT built in as they mentioned adding a Sling Adapter to the setup to send content to other devices.

Sling is NOT built in, but you can connect a Sling Adapter to the hopper

Two Hopper questions, if they have not already been asked....Will it work with my sling adapter and will it work with my external hard drive?

Sling adapter will work, and you can connect an external hard drive as well

PIP is big issue for me! Is it available? Anxious to hear a price.

PIP will be available, but it will only be available on the Hopper. PIP will not work on the Joeys

Looks like you guys/gals in the larger DMAs will have a new toy. :) I'm still waiting for DISH to play catch up to D* and get our locals in HD, something D* has had since 2008 here.

What about OTA support? If available how will it work??
