Just received an email from Dish offering to upgrade to Hopper with Sling DVR with no up front costs (claiming a $300 savings). Other than hyping a voice remote and enhanced guide they provide no useful information. They don't even mention which Hopper is included. Hmmm, if I remember correctly the Hopper, at least the one they tried to install last year, has no ota tuner and also has a monthy fee for the DVR. With the info provided I'm not seeing any major advantage over my current VIP211k with EHD (no monthly fee). Built in Netflix and a voice remote don't do a thing for me so why should I consider this an "upgrade"?

I don't know where to start on the differences. Why not just call DISH and ask which hopper and read about the Hopper on their site. Or maybe better read all about it on this site.
But if a DVR fee is out of the question no need to call.

You said upgrade was to a Hopper with Sling.

I’d insist on the Hopper 3, if you can live without a red recording in progress LED.

You might have a savings. Might not. What do you want/need? Sat locals? How much recording do you plan to do? How sensitive to operational speed are you?

All current Dish boxes require a separate USB OTA tuner.

DVR fees will apply.

As usual, cheapest to have only one box.

I don't use the voice feature on the 54.0 remote much, but what is really an improvement over the older and larger ones is the buttons. They used to stick and wear out, but not with the 54.0. Plus it's more compact. I have gotten to the point where I can lay on the couch and do anything without looking at the remote just by the easy layout. The 54.0 remote is the way to go

You could make up for some of the dvr fees by using the Dish Anywhere on a fire stick on your other TVs.

DA only allows one stream at a time.

I have an Amazon Fire Stick that I move between 2 TV's, having two would only remove the necessity to move it.

I've been offered the Hopper 3 by Dish several times now, but I'm just fine with 722k and 211k. Why are they pushing it so hard?
Because of the higher FEES associated with the Hopper" $15.00 and if you have the joeys another $7.00 for each one. Plus they want to eliminate the older VIP receivers and just go with the Hopper/Wally and duo class of those dvrs. Means a lot less people having to keep up support for older receiver classes and their software and replacements when they crap out.

All those bells & whistles associated with the Hopper and Wallys are just fine for folks who want them but there are folks, like myself, who neither want nor need them. I'm perfectly happy with the 211k. If a 6 cylinder gets the job done and I'm a happy camper with it, stop trying to push a V-8 on me. :shh

Excuse me but I think that's like being offered a free STD.

I had a Hopper w/sling and it was fine until they rolled out the new user interface, then it really turned my Dish experience to sh#t. Horribly slow doing anything, missed recording shows, and many many more problems, absolutely horrible. It was like trying to run windows10 on an old 286 processor. Eventually got an H3 and all is well again. Whatever you DO NOT accept the free UPGRADE to the H/wsling or the free STD.
Call them up and ask for an H3.

I hear a very important person warming up backstage. She’s a fat lady.

She is no longer en vogue! It seems the Yankees have stopped playing her GBA because two of her songs from the early thirties were deemed racist. I find it somewhat funny because one of those songs was also recorded by Paul Robeson. Is he a racist too...

Someone tried to hack my account so I spent some time on the phone with Dish yesterday to resolve things (all good now, I hope). But afterwards I could not get the guy to accept that I wasn't interested in an "upgrade". He just kept pushing and pushing until I was very close to the point of just hanging up on him when he finally backed down. Even after I had him add up all the charges and fees and he admitted this "free upgrade" was going to cost me more per month he kept on pushing. Very annoying. When I call Dish with an account security issue I don't appreciate being brow-beat by a saleman's pitch. If this "free upgrade" is so important than make it truly free. Give me everything I have now at the same price and maybe we'll talk turkey.
