Hi there. I would like to ask you guys couple questions. I am thinking about getting direct tv and I want the best quality in every equipment.

I current own the hdmi 16bit 1.3a cable, I just ordered the highest quality coax cable which is 4.5 GHz. I will wait for the HR21 Pro which will have 1080P, I know which plasma I want.

So now my question is about the dish/lnd/switch. I know there are 2 different types of 5 lnd dish, the newer one is the slimline 5 lnd.

1) Which one is the best quality for hd and etc?
2) Are there other dishes that people use and are they higher quality in any way?
3) Are there different quality lnd? If yes, which ones are the best quality?
4) Is there different quality switches? If so which one is best?
5) If there is no other dish other then the current 2 5 lnd dish's, don't they have built-in lnd/switch? If so, how are the quality of these and can they be changed

I am sorry, but I am a newbie and would like to know. I appreciate if the pros can help me out!

Many thanks

WELCOME!

The SlimLine 5 LNB dish is the current release dish for HD and I doubt there are any aftermarket companies releasing a better LNB array for it yet or aftermarkt dishes. It likely will be soon after the last new sat goes up I bet; or maybe slightly before.

The newest dishes have a built-in multi-switch for up to 4 tuners; TUNERS, not receiver(s) numbers. The external multi-switches would be for the 5th tuner and up; or to be ready for future expansion throughout your home.

You do know that the HR21 will NOT have digital OTA; there is no 1080P source material any none being rebroadcast either so losing the digital OTA of the HR20 just to get the HR21 is a bit crazy IMHO. Correct?

Are YOU planning on doing the install yourself? If not, you should call an installer to make sure they will use what hardware you have purchased instead of what they provide. Using what they provide makes sure THEY do not receive any negative charge backs for "bad work". Using your hardware can't assure them of that.

I get where you are trying to come from with the "best quality" angle, but think you might be in a bit of "over-kill" mode. The hardware approved by DirecTV for their use is very good.

Thanks for the reply and the info. Do you know what freq is the built-in switch? Yeah I think I was bit over kill there, lol. Yeah I found out that the hr21 will not be 1080p, and beside plasma can do that, so hr20 is better and with ota input like you said.

Thanks for the input, really love this site.

Do you know what freq is the built-in switch?

Not 100% sure but I would bet the FREE user guides would have it (I will see if I can read it too) or maybe one of the installers will chime in and post it for you.

Good luck with it all!

CLICK HERE is one of the approved external multi-switches, so I would ASSUME that it uses the same frequencies.

Designed to interface with 99°/101°/103°/110°/119° DirecTV satellites. To be used with DirecTV AT9 Ka/Ku satellite dish for MPEG-4 compression HD compatible receivers.

Wideband frequency multi-switch: 250-750 Mhz, 950-1450 Mhz, 1650-2150 Mhz

Thank you. Now when you say external multi-switches, is that if you want to change the one that comes already which is built-in or if you want to add more?Another question, I am reading that D* is suppose to launch D11 satelite soon, so if the current 5 lnb are 99°/101°/103°/110°/119°, what you gonna do with D*11? Thanks!

The external multi-switch is used in conjunction with the multi-sw contained within the LNB in cases that require more than 4 lines or another dish.

From what I understand D11 will reside in the 99 slot.

If you buy a plasma make sure you fork over the $$ for the extended warrenty plan, they have a bad habit of dieing off in two to four years.
