dish alignment issue

Hmmm, the photos don't appear to be uploading. How are you attaching the photos? Are you copying and pasting them, or using the little icon in the bar above the message box?

For the dish bracket angle, I had it set for 23.3 and 42 previously, after tweaking and giving up that is where I left off.

Hmmm, the mount for my SG2100 (doesn't work, but I still have the motor) isn't set up like that. Let me look at the pictures for a while ;)

It may seem rotated because the motor is not at 0 at the moment.

I left it like that at the 97.0 satellite with the receiver (via USALS). (Usually I reset it to 0 and start all over again with South etc...and then I go to the receiver and then back for adjustments)

I then very slightly moved the motor and dish together for better South position, got nothing.

Then I moved very slightly dish angle bracket up and down, got nothing.

I like to use 95W myself, because it's such a strong signal. What I would do (if you want to play around before dark sets in) is be a little less scientific... If everything looks lined up properly, drive the motor to the satellite you're looking for 97 or 95, etc. Make sure the parameters of the transponder are entered in your receiver. Then, manually (not with the receiver and motor) loosen the motor mount a bit so you can swing it left to right by a centimeter or so at a time. Do this very slowly. Many times, it is easy to misjudge the location of the satellites on the arc. When I was setting up my brother's system, I was surprised how far west I was from 95W! I swung it somewhat in frustration back to the east and slowly moved it west and I locked on it. (Yes, you'll need your receiver and TV out at the dish for this, or have a person or webcam somehow show you when you hit the satellite!)

PS -- sometimes when you get a slightly better signal, but no picture at all, it means you're on a different satellite. You can try doing a blind scan in those cases to see what it picks up, then judge which satellite you're picking up from The List or Lyngsat. Still, this isn't such a reliable method (not to mention it's very time consuming) as the one we've been describing!

Forget about true south for a moment. Can you find 97w by moving the the motor and dish together? If yes then mark the position on the pole in line with the LNB support arm.
Make sure your LAT and LONG are entered in the USALS setup menu. Now with USALs drive the motor to the 0 ref mark. Now with USALs sent the dish to 97w.
When it stops move the dish and motor assembly to line up with the mark in the previous step. You should be viewing 97w at this point. Tweak for max Q. Lock down the motor to the mast at this point.
Now when you send the dish back to 0 ref that is your true south.

Thats how I setup the test yesterday AM.

Oops didn't mean to interfere with northgeorgia's good advise! Didn't see the post till after I hit the submit reply.

thanks, I will try what you suggest but might have to continue some other time this week.

One question, when I swing it do I make sure the motor is on 0 or to the correct position (that was set via USALS) for the specific satellite?

With the advice I gave, you shouldn't reset to 0 position. If you're looking for 95W, make sure it's set by USALS for that position, then look for it :)

jorgek is right...make sure that in your receiver you have LAT and LONG for your location (in decimals, not degrees...if you have degrees, you'll have to convert).

I finally got a signal.
Just used my cell <-> home phone to see if there are any specific changes in the signal sound (beep set to ON) while adjusting.
Then set the transponder settings and got over 62 Q on 97.0W, up to 80 Q on a few others (although no channels found on those).
Some of the satellites that don't pick up signal I managed to get something by switching from USALS to 1.2 to be able to save the changes after slightly adjusting the motor.

The only problem is 97.0W doesn't seem to have much content at all after I do a auto scan (maybe I better do blind scan instead?). There are only a few multi-cultural channels. I must still be doing something wrong.

Anyhow thanks for all the help you guys are the best.

You just need to tweak it a bit more since some transponders are stronger than others...but you found the satellite! Congratulations :) Once you have it set dead on, you can tighten your motor and you should be able to use USALS to find 95W, 101W, and the rest. Here is a list of all the in-the-clear channels on 97W (and yes, most of them are either religious or multicultural in nature): http://www.satelliteguys.us/threads/315211-Galaxy-19-(97W)-Ku-band-channel-guide-July-14-update

I did blind scan and got much more channels than before, I compared the list of channels (over 300 but lots of repeats) to the ones northgeorgia posted. So I think this is definitely 97.0w.

There seems to be some potential for sports on 97 (I'm looking for mostly soccer), I'm also looking for some local (Canadian channels) and U.S. and possible a movie channel or two, maybe also a cartoon channel :)

I'm wondering regarding the paid channels, is there are way to unlock those. Where would I have to sign up to obtain those channels?

Most of the paid channels on 97W are provided by Globecast World TV. You would have to get a special receiver from them to use just for 97W and select the package you'd want to subscribe to. Other than two erotic channels and a fighting/boxing channel, the packages mostly consist of more multicultural programming. Details at: http://www.globecastwtv.com/
