Dish 721 error smart card not authorized...

I hope this is not another example of Dish wanting to make money off of THEIR MISTAKES!!! And Dish Network will never give anybody a refund for their 721. I paid $550 for mine and I do not see them issuing a refund for that. They will take our money though and it will be another $6 for DVR service and aint their an HD Enabling fee as well? How does that work? If you do not want to purchase an HD package from Dish Network and you have a 622/722 then will you still be charged an HD Enabling fee? Do you have an option of not receiving OTA HD?

I think that the HD enabling fee is $7 and the cheaper HD fee is $10.
why would another $3 be a deal breaker?
I have the $10 HD thing and I am very happy with it.

Having to get another receiver and pay a DVR fee AND a higher outlet fee just doesn't sit well with me. Dish broke my 721 - I shouldn't have to pay for that.

And then after their announcement that the PPV movies will now delete themselves after 24 hours - how far will they go?

I'm not real happy with Dish at the moment.

Dish did not think up the 24 hour stuff the movie folks did and they did not give Dish any choice in the matter. Also ALL pay TV providers HAVE to implement this.
The 24 hour rule is you have 24 hours to finish watching a recorded movie from the time when you started to watch it. inn the 24 hour period you can watch it as many times as you want but after 24 hours poof.

Well I called Dish, a few times, and after all their "troubleshooting" and reauthorizing (I guess) the said they would send me a replacement reciever. They didn't say anything about it being a different reciever. So today I got a 522. I called Dish CS - they told me it replaces the 721 since the 721 is not made anymore (Ok I can buy that) and that I own this new one (no cost). I asked him about DVR fee - again he said there was no change. I'm still trying to get that in writing before I activate the reciever. If all that is true, I have no problem with the swap. But I am not sure if Dish is telling the Customer Service group what they are doing/planning to do. I have the Dish Home Protection plan - which should make it a clean swap in theory (glad I didn't cancel it now). But there was no paper with the reciever to tell me one way or the other about ownership and such. No billing/notice saying if I activate the reciever I will owe $x/mo ... or otherwise. Just the quick install sheet, return UPS lable, manual, cables, remotes, and reciever.

Anyone had any experience replacing their 721 after the TiVo injunction? Should I watch out for anything?

I don't have 61.5 connected, only 110 and 119 and am still having the problems. They are now showing up when watching other channels. Befoer, it was only when watching ESPN channels.

I hope they fix this soon.

I made myself into a liar :(. When I first unhooked the 61.5 feed from the 721 it seem to have fixed the problem because I didn't get the smart card error for a few days. Well last night I was watching TNA on Spike and sure enough that DAMN error message came back . The only thing it did fix was the remapping of my locals problem I was having. Oh well, hopefully they fix the problem.
I can live with it for now. I just have to change the channel for a second to get the message to go away. ALso it don't effect the recordings.

No, Customer Service doesn't know what's going on, and there will be a DVR fee. Enjoy!

Exactly. I had a customer who's 721 was going out right after the injunction. He wasn't the least bit pleased when I pulled a 625 off my van and explained to him that I would have to replace his 721 with it, and Dish would cheerfully be charging him a DVR fee.

I have been having this "smart card not authorized" with my 721 for several days. Yesterday I went to watch some recordings and they were all gone! It was showing all 100 hr of record time free. I rebooted the box and my recordings were there again with only 40hr of record time free. Last night, after the third time of this happening, I deleted all of my recordings then reset to factory defaults.

I haven't watched any TV today, so I don't know how it is acting.

I wish I would have read here first, maybe I could have kept my recordings

I suppose the fees would be as such:

$6/mo DVR fee

$7/mo second outlet fee (if it's an additional receiver)

$7/mo HD enabling fee

$20/mo to use this receiver? And this doesn't include any programming!

Good grief!

Add another $7 for the second tuner outlet fee if there is no phone line connected. This would make it a total of $27. The 721 is not subjected to that additional tuner outlet fee since there is not a tv2 output.

Good grief. There is no phone outlet at this location.

This gets more unacceptable the more it goes. Dish is really pushing it.

When will they start charging you just to answer your phone call?

How about charging you a fee to send you a bill?

Just wondering - is that expectation or experience? I was wondering if anyone has already activated a replacement reciever since the TiVo verdict to replace a malfunctioning 721. I hope you're wrong. I did manage to get a email reply confirming no DVR fee, so I at least have that electronically if they change their minds. I am getting sick of the interruptions and resets (several per day), so I will hook up the replacement and activate it tomorrow. So I guess we'll see what happens after that.

"pjmrt"
the reason that they would say there will be no DVR fee is that right now programing with "DVR Advantage" is the same price as regular programing. This is a price freeze till 2009, after that I believe "DVR Advantage" will cost extra... like before the freeze.

thought I'd post an update for those still struggling (if any) with the error 005 - smart card error. After contacting Dish, they sent me a 522 in exchange. I got my answer in writing - I am the owner of the 522 just like I was for my 721 and all fees unique to the 522 and others (like the dvr fee) are waived. I really could not be happier how it worked out.

So far - no problem. No blank screen or lost sound ... The 522 is different, but some of the features are better, some the same, some not quite as good - but overall I am pleased.

721 replaced with 622 NO CHARGE NO FEES

I just had the same problem with my 721 - called DISH - they indicated the 721 would be replaced with a 622, NO DVR monthly fee, NO fee for lack of telephone connection. Sounds OK to me...

Did not ask...Based on using the 721 for the last 3 years and probably nearing its useful life expectency, I don't know if I care. There should be ZERO associated fees per the customer service rep.

No problems with my 721, knock on wood. If it dies, I'll probably see what they'll offer on a ViP722 upgrade. Then move the ViP622 to where the 721 is, and the ViP722 takes the place of the ViP622 in the LR.

Or just move the 508 to replace a dead 721 and wait for a better deal?

Hopefully, I won't have to make such a decision until after they make me an EA offer!
