Directv HD DVR Boxes Are REALLY Junk!

So what? That really doesn't mean jack if they are not available, now does it?
so maybe we dont have a clue of what decision making went into the use of the dongles, maybe they were far along in the development of the box and the need for the bbc's was added after they were ready to go into production, so what does one do? stop and start redesigning the whole box again, or add the dongles? i add the dongles especially when you may know its a short term fix until the single wires come out.....

The "dongles" are behind the dvr, I don't seem them and I got two spare ones free from D*, could even get more. What the ***K do I care if I have to have them. One of the dumbest complaints ever.

I think the HR20 sucks because it requires a remote and isnt telepathic

What version of the software do you have? I am using the NR software and it cannot tell the difference in new shows and reruns and misses shows frequently, so maybe I need a new HR20?

New/rerun show information being off is almost always the fault of the content provider. If they don't put the information in correctly, it cannot be handled correctly by any DVR.

Correct, BUT I think there is another step inside even that. Usually a DBS company buys EPG data from a company like Tribune that receives and compiles it from the providers. The bottom line is that the end DBS usually has less than 5% to do with the EPG data.

The refurb prob is not the HSP's or any of the installation company's its D* they are insisting on putting the refurbs in and to them its a leased unit so they could care less if you get a new one or a used one!!!

Dongles = One of the most incomplete DVR designs ever. Also no dual live buffers, a polish engineered skip function(I cant use the 2 words I want to here but the abbreviation is N. R.) and a pathetically bad implementation of external storage. I cant believe D* cannot implement a rudimentary file move command from ext to internal and vica versa. Without it its ridiculous. Fill up multiple ext drives? Hope you know what movie aired on what date so you can plug in the right drive when you want to watch it. Want one series on one drive and a different one on another? Not possible if they air at the same time slot.

Ummm.. what are these "Dongles" you all speak up? I don't have a DVR.. or at least not an HD one.

But in the end, its D*'s problem if the EPG data is not correct, isn't it? Its not like we are not paying for that as a part of the service. (My EPG data from comcrap was much better, but offerings and DVRs weren't.)

Blaming it on contractors or suppliers is a lame way of doing business, but it seems that D* uses those excuses all the time. When the contractor did a crap job and I told him to leave, D*'s response was they have no control over contractors. Huh? No control, huh? I had to laugh when that idiot told me that, I had to. When the EPS is wrong, they cannot do anything about it? lol, I am thinking that D* has never heard of performance clauses in contracts. if they really have no control. lol

It says a lot about the sad state of affairs when D* operates like that, such a cavalier attitude to their customers, but they are the best show in town. In the future, either they will change or the market will.

Reread the original message.

I was asking what the point of mentioning the SWM was before anyone could get it. Its like saying the HR22 will have a nice feature a lot of people want, who cares? Its not on store shelves and we cannot call and get one.

At this time, the dongles are the only way we have to get all the HD programming on the HR20, but the HR21 will reportedly have no need for them. I, personally, could care less about the dongles, they are at the back of the cabinet, hidden by the receiver and if they make it work, so be it.

The point here is that a different DVR (say, the HR10) with the same data will have the same issue. It is valid to complain that the guide data for DirecTV's DVRs should be better. It is not valid to argue that it is better on the HR10 than on the HR20.

Back to the original comment....I have 4 HR-20's running. The original HR20-100 I got has been the most stable unit except for early software issues. When I upgraded and added more units this Summer, I went thru 3 replacements on my second box. (Went from an installed HR20-100 new to a refurbished 700 and replaced again for 2nd tuner bad.) The third unit worked fine and seems trouble free. (HR20-700) The fourth unit has problems with re-booting and locking up during the re-boot process and have to push the re-set button 2 or 3 times (New HR20-700) I was surprised since my last three HR20-700's were all new units. This is frustrating when working out the kinks trying to determine if it's a wiring issue, dish alignment issue, power strip issue, etc.only to spend hours determining it's a defective unit. I feel your pain. I do know when you get a unit that works, it will stay running. As to my original HR20-100 gets used the most and has been the most reliable. It is a shame to spend $300 per leased brand new unit, running home and hooking them up getting frustrated and spend weeks getting one that works. Only in Corporate America. Gotta love it.

I'll back him up, I agree. they are P's OS. D* should be embrassed to push such an unpolished box upon good paying customers. They fixed something that wasn't broken. And broke it more.

"but you have all this new HD!" Yeah, sure, I still can't scan for my OTA, DLB is NEVER coming, as of a month ago when I got rid of the damn thing it STILL missed recordings, it STILL can't filter out the channels I get from the ones I don't.

I just don't get the D* fanboys constantly saying how good the HR20 is. The only thing the Hr20 will do that my TIVO couldn't do BETTER is MPEG 4. VOD, DOD or whatever the hell they call it is a joke. Run ANOTHER wire to my receiver, then WAIT for it to download? That isn't on demand....no thanks.
Well for the majority of us that havent had problems what you prefer us say? To me it is a good box. Havent had to reboot it any, havent missed any recordings, ect.
And if your internet is fast enough you only have to wait a minute or so for the buffer to get set, then watch away(DoD)

That you are lucky? :D

The rest of us miss recordings, have faulty equipment, reboot on a regular basis and the fact that you say you don't has no more validity as an argument than our statements, does it? Just the luck of the draw, that is all that it seems to be, nothing more.

Its this way with electronics period. And being that this is a forum, you are generally ONLY going to hear from those having problems.
