Washington, D.C. (December 28, 2007) -- DIRECTV today added The Tennis Channel HD and College Sports Television (CSTV) HD to its high-def lineup.
Tennis Channel HD (DIRECTV's channel 215) was not expected to launch until December 31. This morning, the channel was airing a stretched version of its standard-def signal so it would fit an HDTV's widescreen.
(CSTV HD -- channel 610 on DIRECTV -- was also airing standard-def programming this morning.)
Maria Sharapova will be in high-def on DIRECTV.
Eric Abner, a Tennis Channel spokesman, told TVPredictions.com earlier this month that its high-def channel will be a simulcast of the network's standard-def signal.
Abner says the Tennis Channel has been shooting original productions in high-def since early this year. Starting next year, the channel will start producing live tournaments in HD.
Abner said DIRECTV will be the sole carrier of the channel on its debut. However, he added that the network hopes to secure more carriage agreements in 2008.
With the addition of Tennis HD and CSTV HD, DIRECTV has roughly 87 national high-def channels.
