Someone is giving me a Direct TV Dish and Receiver, are there any Direct TV Channels that can be picked up that using the Direct TV box?

if there is a card in it, you should be able to get a couple preview channels

DirecTV will expect you to activate it for reception of programming. If you get the unit and it doesn't have a P4 card or higher, then you will have to pay to get a new one to be compatible. The older P3 was phased out due to high piracy.

Usually, D* will NOT activate a USED receiver as the ONLY one on a new account - NEW card or NOT.
