Didn't take Ozzie Guillen long to upset ALL of the Miami Cuban community!

Obviously, the Marlins knew Guillen was a loose cannon when they hired him. They probably expected he would say something to piss off an umpire, an opponent, or even one of his own players at some point. But, a key part of their own fan base?? Wow.

Maybe this will help Guillen develop some kind of filter now....

He has mentioned he will NEVER make any political comments in public again.

I think HE and the Marlins did it right. He addressed it immediately BEFORE the next home stand and they suspended him.

question is how forgiving will the older generation of cubans be around here. personally i just laughed when i heard about this but that's me. i don't expect everyone else to see things my way but i know way too many who would hold grudges forever if they could live that long......

I find it funny that the media says he praised Castro, when that is far from the truth

If Ozzie said it while still in Chicago.....it wouldnt have been as big

But Miami with their huge Cuban population....and well then.... ;)

“I love Fidel Castro … I respect Fidel Castro. You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that (expletive) is still there.”

Love and respect?? Sounds like praise to me...

Cuban refugees are not known for a sense of humor when the subject is the Castro regime. I don't see this asa firing offense but he should have been able to foresee how this would be taken.

Still, the LAST thing the Marlins needed was a big protest in front of their beautiful new ballpark the 2nd week of the season. NOT pretty.

Actually, I 'm more concerned about Giancarlo's knee right now!!!!!

Yep, Ozzie has made similar positive comments in the past about Castro and Hugo Chavez and none generated the same attention.

It's funny though that he continually brings politics into discussions when he clearly doesn't understand it...

Again...knowing how he thinks in spanish 1st...i am certain that is not what he meant. Of course, if you think he meant what he said...then that is another story.

In my house, everyone is fluent in both languages...and mostly speak spanish and I have caught myself translating something in english to spanish and after saying it out loud, it sounded absolutely ridiculous.

Agreed...that is why they did the correct thing in addressing it head-on and immediately.

You know, that would sound just as bad, if not worse, in Spanish. "Tengo mucho respeto de Fidel, porque todo la gente le odio, y todavia vive". Uh uh.

Actually, he addresed those comments as well. Based on what I heard in the press conference, because someone from the spanish media asked him about it...he stated those comments about being a "Chavista" were words he stated he never said but attributed to him because of a media friend in Venezuela. Whether true or not, there is a supposed youtube video somewhere I gotta find...is the comments true? Ozzie may say some dumb a$$ shizznit...but I don't think he has ever known to be a liar.

I do not think "respect" or "love" was the word he was looking for.

He's been here since 1985, stop with the second language crutch. He knows English.

Guillen said he has never spoken to Chavez, but in fact he appeared on the Venezuelan leader's national radio show twice in October 2005, when Guillen led the Chicago White Sox to the World Series title. At the time, Guillen said: "Not too many people like the president. I do. My mom will kill me, but it's an honor to talk to the president."

At least the Marlins won't have to worry about Guillen getting in trouble after games in nightclubs...

"I go to the hotel bar, get drunk, sleep," Guillen said, according to the website. "I don't do anything else."

Guillen said he has rarely if ever ventured out to familiar tourist destinations such as Lower Manhattan or the Golden Gate Bridge while on the road. He's lived in Miami for 12 years, he said, and has been to South Beach three times.

"I get drunk because I'm happy we win or I get drunk because I'm very sad and disturbed because we lose," Guillen said. "Same routine, it never changes. It's been the same routine for 25, 28 years. It doesn't change. I don't like to go out."

so has my mother in law and she still doesn't know a lick of english. has nothing to do with it......... i still think ozzy is a you know what but i can't and don't want to get political. either way its his right. he's just an idiot for saying it even if he only meant he likes fidel in some way and not "love". there are a few cubans here who believe it or not love fidel and what he represents but aren't in a position like ozzy is.

I would agree if this was the first time this had happened to him. Maybe he didn't mean to say the words 'love' and 'respect', but he clearly meant to show some sort of twisted admiration for them. Why does he choose to continue make positive statements about his feelings about brutal dictators in his second language?? Common sense, Ozzie....
