DEI denies junior use of number 8

Knowing that this will NOT happen, but :
What do you all think would happen if Jeff Gordon were to change teams from Hendricks to someone else.

I bet Jeff would take his number with him where ever he goes, or could you see Dale Sr. moving to a different team and having to use a different number ?
Hardly, of course it happened in his early years, but that was before he was established as he was thruout most of his career.

Jimbo

actually, jimbo, didn't dale sr drive the number 2 during his first cup championship? wrangler was his sponsor then and rod osterland was the car owner. i knew he drove 2 for a year or so before he switched to 3. but 3 is the number he was long associated with.

I think you are correct, I remembered the Wrangler car but was unsure of the number, but I think you've got it. !

Sorry but I disagree. The driver won't take the number with him if the owner doesn't want him to.

Believe me, they would work something out, I DO believe that Gordon would end up with the number 24 regardless.

I think the whole thing is rediculas ....
If your an established racer you should be able to take your number with you.

I don't disagree with you that drivers should get the number, but it doesn't work that way.

I thought NASCAR actually owned the numbers and leases them out?

They do, each year they offer the same numbers to the team that had it last, if they want it, it's theirs, if not , it's available.

I suppose it's still a possibility that th DEI group could have a change of heart and give it to him, but time is running out as they will need to get sponsorhip and merchandise out soon for next year.

Jr sure screwed up today, starting way back in the pack for Sundays race at MIS

Jimbo

did'nt Jr. own half of DEI or did? Anyway in that case Nascar should give Jr. first dibs on the number. Man some people

No, Dale Sr. did, Jr. was wanting to gain 51 % of the company in order to stay with DEI and Theresa wouldn't go for it. Dale sited poor cars ect. for his desire to leave, that DEI was not doing enough with testing and such for his liking.

Jimbo

In any effect he was part owner, give #8 the number 8

No, I don't think so, I don't think Jr ever had a financial stake in the business, but I do know that he wanted one so that he could impliment ideas of his into the company, probably would have been a good thing seeing after all He IS the driver.
Make no mistake, I want him to have the 8 as much as the next Jr. fan does.

What I fail to understand is this odd preoccupation with the car’s number. Is Junior’s talent somehow grounded in the car’s number? The whole discussion seems silly to me. How about he just crawls into the car regardless of the number and shows us what he has or has not got in terms of talent. Do you people believe that the King would not have won 200 races had he been forced to change his number in the middle of his career? Frankly, once he steps into Hendrick’s car it will be time to put up or shut up. If he fails, what kind of excuse will he come up with then, his car number, the equipment, a lack of testing?

I think it all has to do with money. Teresa should do the right thing and let the #8 go to Hendricks. You would think she wouldn't want anymore bad press than she's already gotten. I'll say one thing. Whoever is driving the #8 for DEI next year is going to get booed off the stage at the 500.

Did you see the King changing numbers ....... at all ????

You 've given me a great example.
Suppose the King decided he wanted to race for someone other than Petty Enterprises, do you think Petty enterprises would say, NO you cannot have your number ???

Of course if that did happen, he would sign with DEI and drive the #1 :):):)

It kinda depends, here's an example going in the opposite direction to what I've been talking about.
Mark Martin (Very Classy guy and racer as well)
He's now with DEI.
As far as I'm concerned, he drives the #6 and always will.
IF Theresa wants to save any grace, she will give the # 8 to Mark and it might help ease the issue of the # 8.

The # 8 has ALWAYS been in the Earnhardt family.
No one that I know of has ever ran the #8 other than an Earnhardt.
I think that has to stand for something.

Are you trying to imply that if he had, he would have suddenly sucked? I cannot believe that the King would have been so childish as to whine if he did not get to keep the 43. If everything were equal, the quality of the equipment and the like, it would not have mattered what number of car he drove, he would have been a winner. The problem I have with this situation is that obsessed fans are making a big deal out of nothing. In fact, having Riki Rachtman leading the “Save the 8” parade makes them and their cause even more ridiculous. He sucked on Headbangers Ball and he is even more retarded on NASCAR RaceDay. The bottom line is that since Jr. crawled out of a Busch car, he has failed to impress me. 8, 24, 20, or 48, it is about talent and not about superstitious crap and numbers.

So at least you admitted your NOT an 8 fan .... that explains your situation and why you don't understand.

IF Gordon left, he would want his number.
end of story....

Who is this Riki Rachtman character you mentioned and what does he do with Nascar ?

This could be so easy, if Theresa was willing to do the right thing.
It's a shame Dale Sr is not around, of course we would not be having this discussion, but if Jr wanted to move on Dad would have given him the 8 to go with him .... See the # 8 was driven by HIS Dad and Jr started driving it in honor of his Grandpa.
BTW, I remember Sr. stating that the number belonged to Jr. a few years before he passed.
He was proud that Jr wanted to run it.

FWIW, they may look the same, but NO TWO CARS ARE THE SAME ON RACE DAY.

That's because he is the owner. He can take his number because he owns it.

Does King Richard still own Petty Enterprises ?
I think so, but I'm not sure.

So, can you imagine if Jeff Gordon decided to leave Hendricks, do you think Jeff would not want to take his number he's built with him ?

Jimbo

I never said anything of the sort. However, to tell the truth I do not have a favorite driver. I watch the races with some regularity however, I do not own any NASCAR merchandise be it t-shirts or toy cars.

Riki Rachtman is that tattooed up fool who appears on NASCAR RaceDay on SPEED with John Roberts, Kenny Wallace, and Jimmy Spencer. You know that clown that started all of that nonsense about “free the 8” or “save the 8” or whatever the hell it was. Well he used to host a show a long time ago on MTV called Headbangers Ball.
