Hi,

I'm getting my 3 room D* system with tivo box installed saturday. I don't have long distance service with my phone company. Can I use a phone card for the initial call to set up the tivo, and if so how long do you think I unplug the phone line in between calls safely without losing service?

Thanks

I don't have long distance service with my telephone company either. As I recall, TiVo setup uses 1-800 numbers. Even if you don't have long distance service, phone companies are required by FCC regulation to provide it for free. You actually have paid for it in taxes and service charges.

But if you don't sign up for some package with some provider you end up paying rates that are out of this world. I think I read somewhere where either Sprint or MCI wanted to raise their interstate rate for a call that wasn't part of a package to $0.35 per minute. That could get expensive really quick.

Yea, that way they can get folks to pay them money every month to get a discount. I was trying to find the tariff rate's for residential, but found this for business, $0.74/minute during the day, $0.55 at night (http://consumer.mci.com/mci_service_agreement/sb_pdf/Commercial_Dial_1.pdf)

I don't understand. All 1-800 toll free calls go through and there are no charges, even when I do not have a long distance provider. I pay nothing. Zip! I use my cell phone for long distance.
