Continuous calling out from 522 DVR/tuner

I have the two tuner/DVR (522) from Dish Network plus an HD tuner (821?).

I am also using Vonage VoIP over Adelphia high-speed cable Internet service for my telephone service.

My problem is that one of these two tuners tries to call out on an 800 number to Dish Network 40 to 80 times per day! I can see these call attempts online through my Vonage account. Usually, there are 4 calls to the same number over a five minute period. This is attempted every couple of hours throughout the day.

Dish Network's tech support suggests I take the 522 to an authorized service shop.

Is anyone else having this problem? :(

Thanks!

There's been some reports on 522's picking up the phone due to Caller ID issues, but I'm not familiar with this one.

The thing that gets me is who did that CSR think an authorized service shop was???
So far as I know, all you can do is have E* do an RMA - remember THEY own the box, not you!

I have a 508 with Vonage (since 03/04) and also see calls made from the 508
an example
Date Time From To Duration
8/19/04 11:49 PM XXXXXXXXXX 18002679084 1 min
8/19/04 11:48 PM XXXXXXXXXX 18002679084 1 min
8/19/04 11:46 PM XXXXXXXXXX 18002679084 1 min
8/19/04 11:47 PM XXXXXXXXXX 18002679084 1 min
8/19/04 8:44 PM XXXXXXXXXX 18002679084 1 min

8/19/04 8:43 PM XXXXXXXXXX 18002679084 1 min
if I call this 800 # it answers like a Modem.
Just last weekend I tried to get a PPV movie and was unable to
dial out (the telco connection was OK) but the 508 thru Vonage
was Not ableto make the call.

Reverse a DSL filter and stick it on the line... from what I hear this is a good solution and works for TIVO... I havent tried to dial out over my VOIP line... ill hook my 311 to my VOIP line when i get home (I have a main line for the house and VOIP for my office.

I have a 522 and Vonage and the exact same thing started happening on 8/12. It hasn't interrupted my phone use at all, but I would like to get it fixed.

I believe one day someone is going to come in here and say "My 522 literally exploded today." These things seem to be getting worse.

My caller ID always shows up as "Out of Area". Could this be caused by my wireless telephone adapter + DSL Filter? I'll have to test this out. I wouldn't mind NOT being plugged into a filter for that, because it only calls late at night anyway right? Shouldn't really interupt my DSL line.

It's amazing. The penguin on top of my 522 exploded! No, really. I also have Vonage. I went and looked at my call history. I found a couple of weeks ago I had the same problem. In the space of about 10 minutes, either the 522 or the 322 called out several times. Yesterday, one of them made a single call around 11 PM, once.

As those of us with Vonage know, the ability of a modem or fax to easily communicate over it is not one of its features. It probably had trouble talking.

Vonage/Dish fix

I have a 508 Dish Receiver. I saw this thread since I just got Vonage last week and noticed all the 8002679084 numbers on my dashboard (google for the number brought me to this forum). I had to register to post this since I believe this is THE fix.

You must make the Dish receiver dial *99 before dialing out (prefix). It's in the Menu somewhere (under Installation I think). This resolved the Dish connection. I believe that dialing *99 disables any "Bandwidth saver" feature that may be enabled on the Vonage service.

This resolves the faxing problems, too. My fax machine refused to work on Vonage (my bandwidth saver is turned on at 50kbps). If you prefix the number you're trying to fax with *99, it works perfectly every time (make sure ECM is turned ON on the fax machine).

BTW. This is over Comcast Cable Modem. No DSL filter what so ever.

Good luck.

You wouldn't believe it, but this evening...

My 522 literally exploded!

You guys have some weird 522s. Mine is perfectly normal. Right now, it's doing a load of laundry. Just finished cleaning up after dinner. See? Normal.

Yes, with Vonage you need to go into the feature settings and set the bandwidth saver to basically no bandwidth saving. It can't compress it at all.

Go into your dashboard, then "Features", the scroll down to "Bandwidth saver" and hit configure. You want it set to 90 Kbps "Highest Sound Quality". I had the 522 have issues dialing out one time before I tweaked this setting. Never had a problem since May.

But...

That will affect all Vonage connections, including all phone calls.

Just using a prefix of *99 will turn Bandwidth Saver off for just that one call (from the Dish receiver). Then all phone calls won't unnecessarily be using the full bandwidth (50 vs 90).

Comcast has only 384kps outbound. I'd rather only tie up 50 for phone calls, and the rest for Shareaza. :)

How do you put a * in the prefix field? I tried hitting the * on the remote put It didn't put it in the field.
Excellent question, I smell a L2.07 new feature. :)

Unless there's already a way, then by "new feature" I mean L2.07 will break it.

Instead of using the direct access buttons, scroll up and down using the 4 directional buttons. You'll cycle through all the possible characters (0-9, #, *).

Craig,Sorry if I'm being dumb, but I can't seem to figure out how to input the " * ". I am in the prefix field and use the direction buttons on both remote and the 522 box. I can't seem to figure out how to cycle...any thought?

If you're being dumb, then so am I. All the directional buttons do is move the highlighted field around screen. I have tried every button on the remote and nothing gives me anything other than numbers.

BTW - My 522 dials EVERY 2 minutes and each call is exactly 24 seconds long. So count yourself lucky (sort of). This P.O.S. is tying up my phone at a rate of over 4,000 calls per month!!! My last phone bill was over 40 pages long - double sided!

I called the "tech" people and all they could do is exchange my new unit for a refurbished receiver (gee thanks). Didn't mater, since this one does the exact same thing the first one was doing.
I tried the reverse DSL filter at the receiver - no change.
I tried the reverse DSL filter at the cable modem - no change.
I tried setting the 522 to dial a *99 prefix, but there's no way to get the *character (no buttons will put anything into the field other than the number keys).

Anyone have any success?
