Considering 2x Hoppers + 3x Joeys . . . should I wait for the SJ?

I currently have a 722k and a 722 with a total of 4 televisions attached. I learned the hard way that the 722k actually has 3 tuners (due to the broadcast channels capability) and the 722 only has 2 tuners. Based on this I currently can record 5 different programs at the same time. After talking with the customer service/sales people at Dish I came to the realization that the 6 tuner Hopper is actually 3 tuners plus "Prime Time Live" for a total of 6 programs recorded at once. I am preparing to add a 5th television and I do not want to lose functionality hence the plan for 2 Hoppers and 3 Joeys.

The 5th television is not setup yet so I can hold off on the upgrade. Does it make more sense to wait for the Super Joey and do some combination with that or will I still need 2 Hoppers to support the 5 total televisions?

My reason for seriously considering the upgrade now is that Dish is offering me some significant incentives to not move to DTV and the Genie. The DTV guy was at my local Costco and had a serious package that would give me 5 TVs on one Genie and because of Costco it is all free plus a cash back gift card. I think that I want to stay with Dish but the DTV package is very tempting and Dish was not originally willing to upgrade me without additional cost.

What do you folks think?

Ummmm.... The 722K has 2 OTA tuners via its OTA module. The 722 has 1 OTA tuner built in. So, your 722K has 4 tuners and your 722 has 3 tuners. That gives you 7 tuners as you are....

Welcome to SatGuys!

What Bobby told you is true.

NOW- if the increased cost is not a major concern, you might be better off with 2 HWS. 6 tuners, plus the PTAT business. Why? Well, you can provide independent viewing to 5 TVs PLUS another tuner dedicated to recording something in the background. But frankly, I think you'll get used to recording everything and watching from the DVR and skipping the commercials. A single Hopper (HWS) with a Super Joey will only give you 5 tuners, plus PTAT. Not sure of your situation, and the number of viewers, and how many actually want to watch live, but you might well be better off with 2 HWS and 2 or 3 Joeys. You can add a Super Joey later, but that only works with a single Hopper, so you only get 5 sat tuners. Do you all tend to watch live? Or DVR'd? You could save a LITTLE money with 1 HWS & 1 SJ and a couple or three of Joeys. Not sure it's worth it. Depends upon the number of independent viewers and the number that is willing to watch from the DVR. And you can mirror the the same program to multiple TVs, if they don't need independent viewing.

FYI, I have 2 HWS and 1 owned Joey, about to be deactivated. Only two of us in the household.

Based on his description, I think he may have a 722 with 3 tuners (1 OTA built in) and a 722k with no OTA module which would be the 2 tuners he is referring to.

Did Dish later tell you they'd provide a 2nd Hopper for no add'l money ? One Hopper + three Joeys is the most they'll give for free (or fairly low cost), if I'm not mistaken.

Hall: They did say that they would include it. I am still debating but I think that the Dish offer is the best deal for me.

NavyChop: Thank you for the welcome.

Just to clarify for everyone . . . I tend to move around and I also am finishing the basement and a 4 season room that will both require connectivity. I also have a lot of things on my schedules so that I do not miss any old episodes that originally did not get recorded.

Thank you all for the welcomes and the advice. I love this site.

The monthly difference between a second Hopper and a Super Joey is only $2. $12/month vs $10/month.
