Comcast files a patent that does the total opposite of Auto Hop

The networks still will not like this, and it is likely that Comcast could be successfully sued over it. They are not showing the network commercials, but ones that they sell. Unlike Dish's solution where the programming is there but just not watched, Comcast is inserting their own material and selling it.

Comcast owns a network. They'll cut a deal with all the networks that allow its' use.

Comcast is a Network (NBC)..Im thinkin the Networks are on board..personalized advertising is a networks dream

There are ad spots specifically set aside for the local theif to place his ads in instead of the national one. If you don't believe me, watch OTA and SAT PIP for a night. You will see different ads at some point.

You can see with this kind of thinking how Dish and the rest are quite different in their thinking. Honestly, in some ways Charlie has to be a thorn in their side.
It makes me laugh even more at the controversy over the added lower banner Dish added to remind everyone about Dish Online. Sure seems like nothing compared to not being able to skip commercials, or getting alternate commercials.....

That is NOT how it works.

There is alloted time every hour for local stations or providers to sell ad time, so they can also generate revenue locally. Been done forever like that. Nothing new here.

And certainly nothing to sue about............

Perhaps you did not read the first post...

Subscribers who hit fast-forward, pause and other trick-mode buttons on their remotes would receive an alternate ad displayed in the center of their TV screen or by making the alternate ad partially transparent, according to the patent.

In other words while you are trying to skip over the network's commercial, you get shown one by Comcast. Not talking about the local cable ad time.

N = Nothing
B = But
C = Crap

I'm never going back to a cable company (only Charter in our area). I'd even get rid of Dish, and go OTA and streaming, if my wife could ever figure out how to do more than turn on a receiver, and flip channels.. My reason for having Dish (MonstersHD & FamilyRoom) doesn't exist anymore, and I don't think I'd miss all that much by dumping them.

The ad that is being shown during FF would still be a network sponsered ad, so no problem.

Perhaps, but the patent does not reveal business models of course. The method could be an exclusive revenue generator for Comcast. Comcast may let the networks pay for the commercial, or they may sell the ad time for themselves.

Where's the people that called me Chicken Little again? I know this isn't really related to Auto Hop but this proves that there is a great possibility that Skip Fwd as we know it could change, especially with Auto Hop fueling the fire.

if they were smart..they shouldnt say anything about auto-hop..just let word of mouth do all the advertiseing

Auto Hop shouldn't be the #1 feature anyway. What would that tell someone if the "best" feature on a DVR is skipping commercials automatically? There should be other more compelling, less controversial features of Hopper/Joey being advertised.

How do I turn PTAT off?
