so get this- there are 2 packages for internet only service with charter in my area- 3meg and 256k. 3m goes for 49.99 a month( or 5 total bill), 256 goes for 39.99. I called to see about downgrading to the 256k package and i was told my modem rental (now 2.76 from what i can decipher) would jump to 7.99 with the lower package- WTF?? needless to say I stayed with the 3meg. I cant wait until stand alone dsl (aka naked service) becomes available in our area!

You may be able to buy a cable modem and avoid the $7.99 fee. I see them priced online at $80 at Bestbuy (even lower if you hunt on Froogle). If you can save $12.76/month then it wouldn't take long to end up ahead.

CDH.

They charge more on the modem rental fee to help offset the loss in profit in you having the cheaper package. It closes the gap between the two packages more making it closer in price.
