CD writing problem

Recently my desktop PC's HDD died, so I had another PC built using the same tower (new mobo/processor, new HDD, new DVDRW) Kept old DVD-ROM.

Previously I copied discs (CD's only--data and cda). It was only a CDRW (not DVD RW). The CDs I used for copying were CD-R's, but I have no idea as to the 'speed' rating of the discs. They are Sony's and they just say CD-R, 80min (I believe) They're on a spindle and the label's gone.

The new system has the following: Lite-On (model: LH-20A1S) sATA: Lite-On IT Corporation Global - LH-20A1S: Features : Features

The source DVD-ROM drive is an older Samsung 16E SD-616F.

Whenever I attempt to copy any music CD (I've randomly chosen about 4 different discs ranging from old to new). The progress gets to about 25%, then Nero says it failed. Specifically it says "disc read error."

So I tried ripping MP3's and then burning via Windows xP. The MP3's ripped fine, but again, Windows error'ed after about 25% progress.

Burning a small amount of data seems to do OK via Windows. But if I try to burn more than say 1/2 the capacity of the disc, I get an error.

The shop that built the PC for me humored me and allowed me to swap out the Lite-On burner. Still the same problem persists.

I tried making Nero burn at 12x, but I got the same problem (I couldn't find an option to make Nero burn any slower, but I admittedly didn't look very hard).

Since I've tried burning things directly from another disc, burning directly from my HDD, used Nero, used Windows---I've come to the conclusion that it must be the blank media. Is my logic sound?

Could it be that the reason I didn't have a problem previously is because the older drive was slow, relatively speaking, and thus the discs were compatible? I've probably had the spindle of CD-R's for a year.

This stuff is really foreign to me, so I really need some guidance here. I guess I'll go buy some more blank CD-R's, but I really don't know what to buy.

Since someone built this for you and added all the components to their specs, I would take the pc to that shop and ask them to try burning a cd and see what happens. They need to make it work correctly, otherwise you are not getting what you paid for.

Agreed. And that would be my next step. It's just a pain to disconnect everything and lug the big 'ole thing in. Not to mention the down time.

Could my problem simply be blank media related?

Possibly, but most CD blanks burn fairly reliably these days. If it was DVD blanks, I would say yes.

DVD burners do not always make good cd burners.

Hmmm...that's discouraging.

I guess I'll try buying different blank CD-R's.

If it persists, I'll take it back in.

What error correction and drive speeds are you attempting?

Bought some new CD-R's and still having the same problem. The problem persists whether I write from an image off the HDD or directly from the DVD-ROM.

Slowing it down to 16x made no difference.

I've discovered that there's actually no problem writing data discs. I just wrote ~600MB of data to a disc without problem. I did this through Windows (select files on HDD-->right-click-->send to CD drive--> then go to CD drive and select "write these files to CD. That went off without a hitch.

I copied my Windows Office disc using Nero's software without a problem.

I can write MP3's via Windows to CD without a problem.

All at 48x.

The only problem I'm having is with copying an audio CD. Using Nero, "copy CD fails no matter what speed I choose.

Using Windows, even if I rip an audio CD to MP3's, then attempt to burn as an audio disc, it fails (I'm ensuring that the files, once converted to .cda don't exceed the capacity of the disc either).

What would be causing it to resist copying music, but allowing data (including MP3's)???
