Can't frequent a hacker advertising site :(

Not to sound ungrateful, but I come to this site because I feel it is relatively safe from the hacker stuff that deluges many other satellite sites. If I want to do some research on a website that I suspect may be friendly to hackers, I am very cautious - using several forms of proxy/redirection to avoid having my name/location added to the list of suspected hackers. I cannot afford to be associated with that type of individual, nor can I afford to be a member of a site that associates itself with those individuals or their "hobby"

That being said, I was reading some posts today, and one of the ads that was included in the postings was clearly aimed at hackers. I proxied over to verify, and the first link makes it obvious what is being advertised. I realize that SatelliteGuys has little control over these ads, but if they cannot control "hacker ads" from being pushed to their own visitors, then I cannot frequent this place anymore - and would like my ID and posts to be removed from the site.

I hope that something can be done to resolve this type of advertising, for if not, I am certain that SatelliteGuys will come under the scrutiny of organizations with which they would much rather remain friends. It is a sad day when advertising dollars could ruin such an awesome place

Scott does not get to vet every ad. He sells ad space to places like Google, that then populate the site with ads. Not sure there's much he can do about it.

So I guess that Google themeselves should be scrutinized also? Since the ads come from them? Are you not going to use Google anymore either?

Btw, where is that ad showing up at? Must be a non-paying member ad or something since I only see the sponsors at the top and the one ad in the upper right.

If you ever see ads like that PLEASE send me the domain name of the site that advertising then I can add them to our google blocked list.

Since we have no control who Google sells ads to our only option is to block them when we see them ourself or are notified by members who see them.

I was just over at DBSTalk and saw the same ad running there as well, looks like these guys might have a good size budget. I have also seen like ads at AVSforums and other legit sites. We have no control to whom Google sells to.

It just sucks that we have to wait for their ad to run (and for folks to report it) for us to be able to block them.

Thats the one big downside of Google.

With Burst, I need to approve every ad that they show here before they run. This keeps the crap ads off the site.

And Hall - Having lost hundreds of hours of my life researching, worrying, researching, and defending myself against a satellite giant in court due to a single purchase of an atmel device used in developing a gaming device that I was designing for resale (which consequently never hit the shelves due to timing/lack funds/loss of passion after the long-drawn-out court case), which blindly included me in their mass prosecution... I'm hypersensitive to the issue, yes.

Bought an atmel chip - a perfectly legal device - for a legitimate use, from what appeared to be a legitimate source. Ends up that everyone who bought "anything" from this store got targeted by "Big Satellite" because they had a storefront that sold other materials as well.

An atmel is a pretty versatile tool - too versatile, I guess. Rock bottom prices didn't trigger any concern in my head, as I hadn't an idea that this whole underworld of misuse existed until I had to do research to determine how I was caught up in this, and how I was going to get out. My "good deal" cost me plenty more than I will ever save in my lifetime.. and taught me some great lessons too.

Looking back at the whole thing, I gotta laugh that I got drug through the mud for buying an atmel, when I had purchased several various models of card access tools, cards, development boards, and software during the process of researching and designing a secure encrypted localized debit/access hardware/software solution for arcades and computer terminals. Much of the equipment I owned could have been easily mistaken for illicit material, but there was no concern about anything but a stupid little atmel.

End the end, I was right, and they were wrong. But that doesn't make up for the hassle/worry/lost time/etc along the way. So now I do very much try to scrutinize the company I keep, and the places with which I do business.

I feel your pain... I had a college buddy go through the same thing for purchasing an atmel chip. The thing was he was developing a keycard access system for his dorm's laundry room for a course project. He too was also drug through the mud by the "almighty man". The funny thing is, he didn't have any family here nor did he even have a view to the south from his dorm! Pretty much ruined his chances at a college degree due to funds and time. Last time I heard he's back home working full time at a lumber yard paying off his legal fund debt. Nice, eh?

One of the main reasons I will *NEVER* subscribe to that satellite company.

Back on topic, I saw two or three of the Google adverts with URLs carrying the word: KEY
...and related to satellite or FTA or some such.
That was just yesterday.
I checked out one of the sites, not by using the link, but by typing in the URL myself.

I didn't report or complain, because . . .
They were just sites of benign links to sat or FTA products, but not really key related.
So, not dirty, but just the appearance of being dirty.

What's next, URLs like: WeSellDrugs, GetYerPorn, ViagraRus, KeyKrackerz, SmokeYerDope?
All pointing to legit businesses ?
