Hi all. I am planning on cancelling Dish in the near future, but I have some questions. First does anyone know if you are required to give Dish notice that you are cancelling? For example, 15 or 30 days or anything like that? Second they don't seem to have any information on their website, so what will need to be sent back and do they send prepaid boxed or anything? I talked to a CSR and my contract has expired so there will be no early termination fee, but are there any other fees I should know about? Thanks for any info you can give me!

Shipping costs are passed on to the customer. You can ship yourself or use the prepaid shipping label financed by you. They will want receiver(s), remote(s) & lnb. Other than that it is pretty cut & dry if you are out of contract.
I'm sorry to hear that we will be losing you as a customer. We do send boxes with prepaid shipping labels so that you can return the receiver, remote, switch (if applicable), and LNB. If you choose to use the labels that we send, there is a $17 fee per label.
As mentioned, you can call and cancel, no notice is needed. If there is anything that I can do for you, please feel free to send me a PM.
You are going to lose a lot more if you blow out Breaking Bad. I know I'll be gone after 12+ years.
What if he can't get to his lnb? I personally would get up on my roof, but what if he can't get on his, is afraid, etc.?
It is unreasonable to ask for the LNB back. I am sure they ask knowing most people aren't capable of getting in the roof to obtain it to send back, so yet another charge to your account. This is what Dish has become over the years, sorry to say.
so negative. Now I cannot be 100% sure on this, but I know historically speaking if you cannot safely access the LNBF they will waive the fee for that. I mean honestly, if it were your company would you want to open yourself up to lawsuits from inept people trying to get something off their roof? Not putting anyone down, I just mean not everyone has the ability to use the necessary tools such as a ladder. Although the cost for shipping is surprising to me, I remember when the prepaid labels were sent at no cost to the customer. Well, it is what it is. Cheers
I just canceled recently due to a great win-back promo from Time Warner. The Dish Rep I spoke to asked if I could safely get to the LNB...so I am sure they do not require it if you cannot. Also, they sent me my boxes for return of equipment and did not charge me at all for them. I have been gone over a month and can confirm there was never a charge for those. I didn't even ask for that...she just offered to send the boxes at no cost. 
Just return the receivers and don't worry about anything else. You don't even have to return the remotes. If they say anything about the LNB you just tell them you were unable to access it. There should be no problems, don't let others scare you with crazy stories. If you run into any problems you just contact a DIRT member here.
Just to add to this: I cancelled recently as well. The CSR I spoke with said nothing about the LNB, just the STB/DVR and remotes. She was pleasant and efficient, my understanding is that you will be charged for the current month regardless of when you cut off service so she asked if I wanted to schedule the disconnect for the last day of my billing period. I said yes and this allowed me to watch some DVR stuff as well as some extra subscription programming. As I was still concerned about the LNB (it's on a brick chimney at the top of my 4-story townhouse) I contacted MattG on this site and he was great about annotating my account to not require its return. Frankly, if I was choosing based solely on the quality of support I'd still be with Dish; unfortunately, being a sports fan in the NYC area I had no choice (and this was even before the rumored drop of AMC).

Well, it's academic now but the Dish tech put it up. It's a brick chimney and he sank some anchors into the mortar (easier than into the brick, I guess
). But it HAS stood the test of time, 6 years+. Really, my whole experience with Dish has been top drawer, with the exception of the very first installer (again, from Dish themselves) who decided to hook into my neighbors dish instead of putting up a separate one for me. That amazes me to this day, how he thought he could get away with it.

I don't know if you directed that at me (since it followed my post), the OP or both, but thanks regardless. As I've always said, you vote with your wallet; nothing's perfect and I tried to keep both Dish and FIOS but in this economy it became impossible.
The LNBF only needs to be returned if it can be safely accessed. DISH does not recommend anyone every climb on their roof for any reason. If anyone has any issues at all, please contact DIRT and we will help. We wish the OP the best with his new Pay TV provider! Thank you!
I think the biggest problem with a chimney mount would be damage to the chimney itself...especially on older homes.

I gather the odds of failure or damage to the chimney is higher than with other mounting methods. Of course, YMMV. Bob Haller made a post about a neighbor losing part of his chimney due to such a mount. Yeah, I know.
