As per Canadian law, on Monday Jan 23; Canadian stations earlier (east ) to your timezone; will be blacked out from the time their polls close until the time the polls in your timezone close.

This applies to all satellite and cable companies in Canada.

What nonsense. CSPAN promises to show one of the Canadian network feeds. So anyone with a US satellite dish can see it. Typical for Canadians to discriminate against their own citizens.

Well, think about it? With the misleading reports our stations have done in recent elections, why not do the same here? It's not discriminating, it's away to ensure everyone goes and vote before the election results are in. People here founds out that there guy is doing good and decides to go home instead of voting. Not wanting to wait in lines to vote if your guy is winning. Later to find out he/she loses because you didn't go vote. You do yourself and no one else any good by not voting. So why not try it for a few elections and see how things turn out?

What is ridiculous is that the Canadian government thinks they can control public information by censorship. There are so many alternative sources of information these days that many people have the ability to access them. All the government does is prevent the poor and underprivileged people from obtaining the same information. A lot of good that does.

CSPAN is available over the internet as well via steaming video. Is the Canadian government going to try and block internet access too?

That is the fault of an apathetic voting populace more than the news agencies. You ALWAYS go vote. No matter what you excersize your vote. Vote for Alfred E. Neuman. But go vote no matter if it's raining, windy, hot, cold, icy, snowy. You go vote even if you might miss your big bowling date. Anyone who doesn't vote for ANY reason what-so-ever deserves no voice in government until the next election.

There is also a little thing called the first amendment here in the U.S.

Since I became eligible to vote at the age of 18 (1980 general election was the first) I have not missed any national or state-wide elections. I missed two school levy votes mostly because I forgot! :) Both levies passed (darn it :)).

See ya
Tony

In Calgary, the local cable co. (SHAW) blacked out the nights coverage of CBC-HD from Toronto.

Needless to say, the blackout is not 100% enforcable, however, the spirit of the blackout is to prevent the sway of last minute voters in the west with early results in the east.

I was watching the results on CSPAN last night, which was mirroring the CBC broadcast and right after Martin was finished speaking, they lost their satellite feed. I figured that it was some government plot to stop the US from listening to Harper's speech, but they recovered the signal just in time, so maybe that was a sign of the transition to a new government.
