I have a universal Kuband LNB, and a regular dish 500 dish, can I watch Satmex 5 with this on a coolsat 5000?

I hate to just say NO , but there's not much more to it than that , a dish 500 dish is too small for good Linear FTA reception.

I wish I knew what interested you on Satmex 5 so I can elaborate a little more on the dificulties of getting anything from that sat on a Dish 500 dish.

I'll venture a little and guess that you might possibly want to watch some of the Spanish programming , most of it being on C-band means you would need at least a 160cm dish.

My suggestion would be start off with a 90cm motorised dish and start enjoying what is currently available FTA , if you enjoy it and want to move up to a large C-band dish to get more channels and especially Spanish channels that would be your best bet .

Lot of usefull information on these forums , I encourage you to read as much as you can and welcome to Satellite Guys.

jayelem - Could that Dish 500 dish somehow be retrofitted with a Linear LNB and then pointed at hispasat at 30 West? I thought I read somewhere that the hispasat satellite is pretty strong and could be received on an 18" dish.

nope. Hispasat isnt that strong. There are a couple stronger TP's but most of the readings I get on a StarChoice 75e dish are between 50-75

Using a small dish is not very practical and signal quality will be marginal , so I imagine that you'll lose signal as soon as the 1st cloud covers your LOS.

I do remember a thread from awhile ago which discussed getting Hispasat with an 18 inch dish , but I also know that the person who tried it also lives in the Hot Spot for the footprint , so maybe that made the difference.

Here's the link

I have a 90cm dish stationary on Hispasat and I really don't see how a small dish can work properly , I read about someone who got the channel maps for his 4DTV using an umbrella .....................

I guess lots of things are possible with experimentation , it's just not optimal.

I'm not entirely sure because I have never tried, but, I think 30W way too far east for me to have LOS to see.

I'm at 38.8 Latitude x 90.1 Longitude.

I suppose I could try it, but, I think 58W is the farthest East bird I can get.

You should be able to see it as long as there are no houses or trees blocking your view:

Satellite: 30.0°W Hispasat 1D Ku
Elevation: 14.4°
Geographic Azimuth: 109.8°
Magnetic Azimuth: 109.8°
LNB Skew: -47.2°R

I can get it in Minneapolis with a 9.9 elevation

I use a separate dish
