Can I automatically transfer shows to my EHD when the internal drive is full?

I'm using a VIP622 receiver and the internal hard drive is usually full and I have to manually transfer shows to my external hard drive (EHD).

Can I setup an automatic transfer (eg. every day or something) to move shows to the EHD when the internal drive is full? (or maybe record directly to the EHD or *something* besides having to manually move shows)

It wouldn't matter...

It seems like the EHD functions like an "archival" system instead of extending the existing internal DVR storage.

The VIP622 has small internal storage (13 hours HD, I think?) so if I record a bunch of shows during the week I'm going to have to archive some of them to prevent accidental erasure. Kind-of a pain :(

Archiving is exactly what it is designed for. 30+ hours of HD in a 622.

Oh, really? I'm not sure why I thought it was so small. 30+ hours isn't bad at all.

What's the purpose of archiving stuff though? If I record something then I generally want to watch it soon. I suppose recording movies might be nice for long-term storage but for short-term it seems a bit limited.

Just my opinion of course! :)

Thanks so much for the help!

It would be nice to be able to indicate whether to store it on the DVR or external hard drive when initially setting up the recording. That would be great for when i'm archiving movies that I don't plan on watching in the near term.

Then again, given the past problems with external hard drives and recordings being erased, maybe adding a feature isn't worth the risk of breaking something that is finally working properly.
