I think it boils down to this. Dish Network has a good (not great) service if you are willing to pay the monthly rate and continually upgrade your receivers and pay their constant increases.
Myself, I am a semi-old guy who remembers when all TV was free. As I mentioned, I had Dish for 4 years and it's a good service but when I had problems with my mulit-switch they told me I would have to pony up $150. This was on top of the $450 I paid through the years for receivers. I figured for that kind of money I could get an FTA system for myself and analog cable for the wife which also reduced my Internet fee.
With HDTV coming into its own there is just no end in sight to the money train IMO. So with an FTA system I am 1/3 of the way toward my ultimate goal which is FTA, OTA with rotor that can get HD and Mini-CBand.
So, its all how you look at it. There are guys on the FTA forum that have Dish, Dish HD, FTA, CBand and OTA. And there are guys that just have a BUD. And a few that have just FTA. To me, its just TV and not worth big money.
But I should add that if I do get my ultimate system I still might buy Dish Family Pak for the wife. I could live with $19.95.
