bad LCD

A few days ago my laptop's LCD screen, which is less than 3 years old and not heavily used, developed a flickering column of pixels. Now the entire column is permanently lit. It's not under warranty. Is there any source for cheap replacement screens? It's a Dell 17" widescreen.

Define cheap. There are often adds for replacement display panels from various sellers on eBay. Laptop Parts and Laptop Accessories at Laptopparts Inc. has done ok for me for keyboards and other failures in the past. Never used them for a display though.

Chances are, it is going to be cheaper to replace than to repair, at least that has been my exerience in the past. However, it may be possible to buy a broken laptop (with a good display), and cobble the two of then together into a working unit. I've done that in the past.

On the other hand, it could possibly be just a loose ribbon cable connection the display to the controller. (Have that happen, as well, too.)

Go to Dell online, browse to Support with the Service Tag number and click on Warranty info. Extend your warranty one year and then call Dell the next day to get your laptop repaired.

That sounds like fraud to me.

How can you "extend" a warranty that is already expired?

"Extending" the warranty AFTER the warranty expires costs twice as much as it does if you extend it before it expires BUT Dell allows it.
