AVS Forum is weird.

I have to say that the average IQ there is 10-20 points lower than any other technically oriented Forum on the Internet.

Any thoughts on why ?

They rot their brain watching TV ? :)

I agree that some there are just dumb, but many are very smart. Smart to the point that arrogance steps in.

"Smart to the point that arrogance steps in."

I noticed the opposite. Some of them know so much and are so technical that think that makes the right to be arrogant.

I still distinctly remember numerous polls like "Which HD DVD format are you going to get, HD-DVD, BluRay, or neither (wait til a 'standard' is finalized) ?". The majority said "neither". Go look how busy their HD-DVD and BluRay forums are.... Hell, a lot of 'em have BOTH !!

The arrogance that a $100 DVD player can do as good or better than their beloved $900 Denon is sad too. I do recall 2-3 years ago that if you asked for help with "budget" DVD players, your thread would be very lonely. Now, there's multiple threads for that topic every day !

Hey, The AVS forum is just a bunch of fanatical hobbiests all collected in one location. But for fun, try posting a thread poll in the CRT forum which is better CRT or digital etc. then do the same in the digital forums. The poll numbers are to be expected but what is hilarious are the responses. Some other rules or no-no's on AVS Forum are:
Never express your opinion that ISF tuneup is a waste of money.
HD Lite
HDMI vs DVI
upconverting DVD to HD, good or bad?
Dish Network or DirecTV which is better? whoops! wrong forum...
:D

Yeah they do have their cast of characters over there, but if you look at how big they are ultimately they do a good job. (yeah I said that)

I am a long time member there and post from time to time, I had a problem there and was banned a few times for sharing information which they took as me advertising SatelliteGuys but in reality I never did, I just had a picture showing mmy information which was hosted here.

We have grown up and moved on, and I actually enjoy getting together with David Bott at the AVS parties and events and also enjoy talking with him from time to time. While I don't agree with eveverything he does, I got to admit I do look up to him and respect him for what he has built. And I also do value it when we talk and he gives me advce on how we here at SatelliteGuys can better grow.

Well, I didn't go over it with a fine tooth comb, but it appears the spelling is correct even though you have two chances to make mistakes :)

Oh come on and give me a break, their boards are huge compared to satellite guys and they help a lot more people solve a lot of technical problems. I mean, isn't that one of the main reasons for message boards, so people can post problems and the gurus help them out and share their knowledge??? I browse both satellite guys and avs forums and find both of them to be the best sources of information for hdtv, satellite info, etc...The main reason both are so good is b/c they both are not boards for people to argue and flame each other...Unlike other boards that merely exist for the purpose of making fun of each other instead of sharing knowledge....There is nothing worse then trying to solve a problem and you have to scroll through 11 pages of people flaming each other, personally i think that is when the IQ starts to drop....

I have not found that to be true about AVS Forums.

I find that most members are not interested in helping other people or answering questions. They are only interested in expressing their particular opinion.

I have found that there is a certain segment of the male population who have just enough math skills to be able to keep up with technical discussions, but in terms of overall intelligence, sophistication and intellectual knowledge, they are not very bright. In past decades, these were the car mechanics - the sort of guys who tinkered with hot rods - but couldn't tell you who the Vice-President was, and didn't care.

Over the last 5 or 10 years, a lot of these guys have gotten involved with the computer world ("There's always a career in Computer Maintenance !!") and evidently TV as well (it wouldn't surprise me if a significant number of the DBS installers were these types of guys).

So, while some of you seem to encounter genuine geeks/nerds at AVS Forum, I see mostly these "hot rodder" types...

PS And a lot of them seem to work in the Los Angeles Television industry - AVS seems to be a home base there - which might explain the general hostility at AVS towards all things Charlie-related...

I understand what your saying but I still disagree, there's a lot of good info on both satellite and avs, bottom line....

There is info on AVS - there are people who say "I just bought the new Fuzu 72-inch LCD" and then give you a detailed 2 page review.

However, people do not bother to answer questions. I remember reading a thread where someone who had posted a question a couple of times, while people who owned the product continued to go back and forth about trivialities, and finally the questioner just lost it out of frustration.

Satelliteguys is one of the better places to get help and have questions answered... people who had questions before, then stick around to help the next guys...

Theres a lot of info there but there's far more pompousness and pandering to LA TV people. Also if you have a theater room that they have sold you equipment for you are treated as of higher intelligence than the average user. New users are also put down and told to shut up. Ive found that even in myself that hanging out there as a newbie will turn you into an arrogant prick more interested in saying "go search" or "old news" rather than helping people.

I remember one of my first experiences there with "networktv", The subject was the daytona 500 on NBC years ago. They had one or 2 HD cameras on the event with the rest SD. I said that when the cars went around the track the TV went HD, SD, HD,SD every lap and that one could suffer from eye strain. I thought the product was horrible. I was quickly chastized by one of their prick moderators and told that I was harrassing a more important being than myself

I Agree with you,The guys who really help people there actually most of them are not from the staff( for example Mr Bob,Ht waits or jwebb 1970)but the most annoying thing is trying to read a 350 page thread and when you finished you found out no value at all to resolved or get alternatives for specifics .

Fortunately for me, I'm not a "high-end" guy and don't have to suffer through the topics in which money-wasters are committed to "seeing" the superior performance of whatever they have just spent $20,000 for. I also am a trailing edge buyer rather than a leading edge buyer, so I also do not get sucked into the battles between engineers who have professional stakes in the success of one product or format versus another.

I confine my posts there to the HDTV Hardware and Local Reception threads. There are a lot of retired engineers who regularly make substantial contributions to the collective knowledge and understanding of the member participants, for which the rest of us are appreciative. Certainly, some well-meaning neophytes drop in now and then, believing that if they tell us that the Terk or Monster product they just bought solved all of their problems, then they will have made a similar contribution to the general welfare of those who do not realize the virtue of those products, but, in those sub forums, such posts do not obscure the more useful ones.

AVS can be good if you are interested in a particular model of TV or DVD player. Having 4 different TVs I can keep up with them by subscribing to only 4 threads vs searching through multiple threads.
I think all forums have a village idiot- thousands of posts but nothing of value or a valued expert that helps everyone in a manner that does not make a newb feel unwelcome.
