Average 622/722 Temperature thread, Is your's Hot?

The VIP722 that I flipped around the laptop cooler has not changed temp yet. Still has an average of 116.

When I first set up my cooler, it seemed like it took a couple weeks to see a difference in temps. I think it has to do with the updates the receiver gets from time to time.

I just ran across another item that I'm going to try:

Amazon.com: Thermaltake Mobile Fan II External USB Cooling Fan - Us: Electronics

I bought 2 of them as I have a Playstation 3 that I want to try to cool down also. Seems to have good reviews on air flow and sound.

I think you are right about the temp info tied in with updates. I wish we could find out for sure. I like that little external fan. Might try one out with a USB A/C adapter. Thanks for the info.

moonwolf22, I installed two fans that you mentioned you are trying out. Amazon.com: Thermaltake Mobile Fan II External USB Cooling Fan - Us: Electronics Both DVRs are real cool to the touch now. Lots cooler than just with the laptop cooler. In fact, I think I am going to remove the laptop cooler. However, the readings haven't come down. Two of my DVRs temps did change some and there hasn't been any updates that I know of, just the normal nightly stuff. I wish someone knew how the temp reading monitor works in the DVRs. Check the latest readings in my spreadsheet. How are your DVR temps doing with your new fans? Thanks again for the cool fan web site. They are neat little fans. Good discovery.

Hey Charlesrshell- Have you seen this thread? http://www.satelliteguys.us/dish-network-forum/133503-best-way-cool-622-a.html The link to the guy who makes coolers just for the 622/722 is pretty interesting. My temps have stayed the same after I used the USB adapter (120,111,89). I haven't gotten around to using the small fan on it yet, still using the cooler pad. This time of year I work a lot of hours and just haven't had the time to "play".

Wow, thanks good info moonwolf22. I think I am going to try the one that attaches to the DVR with thermostat. I am beginning to think that we need to do what Smith, P. suggested to install the heat sinks. I am disappointed my temp hasn't dropped yet. Since I have installed the little USB fan the DVR cabinet is real cool to the touch. Use to be real hot to the touch. I was really expecting the temp to go down by now. It has been almost two weeks with the new fan and no drop yet. I wish a Dish technician would sneak us some info and tell us how the temp readings work in the counter section. Thanks again for the info.

I just set up my ViP 722 and checked readings for base line ....

High - 132F
Low - 32F
Avg. - 105F

Just a note - the fan in the 722 runs at a slow speed all the time !!

I've mounted two Vantec Stealth 80mm fans on left side over openings(1 towards back and 1 up front) ... they are pulling the air out. Unit was very warm/hot to the touch(had hooked up for 2 days) before turning fans on. After the fans were on for about an hour the receiver is only the slightest bit warm now in the back left corner. I'll update number later !!

Update:

After having it hooked up for the winter with the woodstove cranking .. keeping the house at around 75 -76F .. the readings are as follows:

High - 116F
Low - 85F
Avg. - 104F

Also as a side note ... I've cancelled my Dish account and willbe selling my 722 with fans attached shortly .... used for 6 months !!

My avg temp is now up to 125, just got this little guy today and put him to work:

Quick question. On the left side(facing the 722 front) there is a long row of vents, but only two square holes inside the vents(one near the front and one near the back). What is the heat source more close to, the front or the back and should I use to fan to blow air in our pull our out?

Thanks

The power source is at the back on that side, but from what I have read, the hard drive or broadcom chips are the big heat source, they are more toward the center of the case. I coud be wrong.. I had the same fan set up on my 622, I put tape around it to seal it and make better air flow out, had it at the power source. I now have a 722 at that location. I put the 622 in a bedroom and now the fan is not being used on either box. My 722 is showing 120 degree average, it has creaped up slowly since I installed it last Sept.

Ah, thats dumb that they put them in the middle with no opening. Well, maybe I should be cooling the PS then.

That fan only took my 622 temp down 4 or 5 degrees, what really helped was a 6" fan blowing air into vent on right side of box along with the little one sucking at the ps vent.

My thermaltake usb is mounted at the rear of the left side centered over the back hole. Looking at the pictures, this should be drawing ait from inside the box across the PS and then out.

Avg Temp has dropped from 127 to 123 since Sunday.

Temps are still coming down on two VIP722s. Did another configuration change of fans today. Going to leave them alone now and see if temps come down some more. Bottom line is one 722 has a Dish VIP 622/722 Cooling Fan System installed and the other 722 has two Thermaltake Mobile Fan II External USB Cooling Fans installed. All fans are mounted on the left side of the case at the exhaust vents sucking the hot air out of the 722s. I sure hope the new VIP722k (or whatever it will be called) has a better cooling system. Check out the attached spreadsheet for temps and web sites of the fans I am using.

Mines down to 116 avg. I've been able to drop the avg temp 11 degrees by lifting the unit 3/4" and adding the usb fan to exhaust from the rear left opening.
