Are you planning to upgrade to the iPhone 15

The tech specs for the Pro models say the cable needs to be a USB 3 with 10 Gb/s speed. I don’t care enough to research the various flavors of USB 3 since the majority of users, including me, aren’t using wired data connections.

I do notice the rumors of special MFI cable requirements were not true.

What the tech specs don't say is that the cable must have special smarts in it to interact with a throttling system that is built in to the iPhone 15 Pro models, the upper-crust iPads and Macs. Without that smarts, only USB 2.0 charging and data rates (480Mbps) can be achieved (hence the 20x speed increase).

It is USB 3.1 Gen 2 that gives the 10Gbps speeds. You can buy a non-smart 6' cable from Monoprice for $10.99.

Even BMW has given up on charging a fee for heated seats.

There has been lots of misinformation posted about Apple Camera modes and the 15 ProMax version. The 15 has the limitation. The Pro Max maximizes the camera capability for professional videographers who wish to shoot and edit color profiles by shooting in raw which allows detailed color adjustments in post. There is no limitation created by the cable in shooting this high bit rate video. If you wish to shoot this mode your storage capacity may be limited in the phone so Apple offers in the Pro Max up to 1TB of storage and the capability to shoot and record live video to external storage via the 10Gb cable. You could also use other slower ways to transfer phone stored video to the cloud but this cannot be achieved live. By the time you buy a cable and storage drive that works at that speed, you may be better off just buying the 1TB or 512GB iphone.

It was not stated in the presentation yesterday if you can use the Pro Max USB C Thunderbolt connection to a studio monitor display but that would be a really nice feature, especially for gaming and video editing. But they did claim connection to live feed video to a Mac. For those who would use it for these high end applications, the $69 price is not a big game changer. The demo I saw with image stabilization in the iphone Pro Max and the A17 is good enough to replace a $150 gimbal. And many pros use a gimbal for steady shooting. Gone are the days of spending $2000 for a Steadicam vest for a broadcast camera. If you are complaining about the cost of a 10Gb cable then maybe you don't really need one.

There are many reasons why people may choose to go with the ProMax besides high end video editing with ProRes capability and the need to transfer live to an external storage. For most, having the camera zoom capability and the action button will be the most used.

I watched quite a few YT reviews on the iphone 15 and many are claiming they will not be switching since they just upgraded to the 14 ProMax last year and don't personally see the new features has any benefit for them. Any serious YT reviewer will have to stay current or lose viewers. But YT talent may not need the latest as their channel is not about reviews of iphones, rather they may shoot their talking head videos on non iphone topics. The 14ProMax is good enough. I'm upgrading this year because my watch and iphone lack many features and I have been holding out long enough. Even my wife's 12 mini is better as it has 5G which my 11 does not. Last summer we used her 5G connection for hot spot for speed to have my own wifi while traveling. 5G was pretty much wide spread.
The other issue is cost. The new features have to justify the cost, but be sure to look at your bottom line cost after you trade in your current iphone.

In case someone needs this:

If you like the double tap feature of the new Apple Watch, looks like you don't need a new apple watch.

People are showing it working on other older watched.

Just go into Settings on watch, accessibility and quick actions and enable it there. :)

I am currently updating the software on my ultra and when I get a chance I will try it for myself and report back.

If you check the YouTube video at 1:19:00, it is stated that using the $70 cable to an external hard drive opens up the possibility of 4Kp60 ProRes. The point is that this cable isn't technically required for that kind of speed but Apple went to the trouble of building a detection system into the SoC so they demand it anyway.

The surprise for me was that the charging speed wasn't improved with the optional cable as the rumors suggested it might. Yes, it can damage the battery (if the charging isn't properly controlled) but sometimes you don't have an hour plus to charge your phone.

There aren't any new sensors in the AW9. Like many "new" features, this one is a software feature. I'm not sure why Apple chose to explain how the heart monitor was somehow measuring blood flow to arrive at the conclusion that the gesture had been made.

The big wins appear to be brightness and the reduced dependence on external Siri command processing.

When did leather become some sort of dangerous blight on the environment?

Heck, I have a Xs Max and see little reason to “upgrade.”

Since you are worried about being able to record Pro Res, at 4K 60fps the internal storage seems limited to ProRes 30fps bit rate. But according to the video you are correct, 4K60fps in Raw will require the Thunderbolt connection speed to external storage. However, if all you're interested in is speed you can record HD video at up to 240fps for slomo. Even my 11 ProMax can do that. Review that video again beginning at 1:18:30.

Since I see 3rd party cables for this coming out now, I may just get one to experiment with, not that I would ever use that in the field, mind you.

I once experimented with recording raw video and it was really a slow process but did offer lots of creativity for evening and night shooting.

If I were in your position, I would consider it mostly for the 5G speed alone. At some point you will get tired of LTE. If you never do anything more than read and send text and email then stay with LTE and pay for a new battery upgrade. It's pretty wide spread and 5G is still growing across the nation.

Did you go through the configurator on Apple.com to see what your trade-in value would be? Mine was $300 for the 11 ProMax.

Hmmm. I checked months ago at some online non Apple site and mine wasn’t listed, leading me to believe trade in was $0. But now, at your suggestion, I used the Apple app and it APPEARS to be offering $170. It’s that “UP TO” part that disturbs me.

SWMBO has a 13 mini. It has 5G but only gets an incrementally better signal where we keep our trailer. I suppose it might matter elsewhere, but I’m not complaining about current coverage - except for around the trailer.

We can usually get YT on the Y there, but that’s AT&T - an organization I choose to never patronize again. They’ll have to be happy with the $200 they took from me.

Yes, I watch videos on my iPhone. Maybe if we travel more, 5G will matter. We are considering chancing another cruise, but 5G won’t likely help there.

And not much point in making a double buy, as I’m not convinced of the value of the Apple Watch.

ON EDIT: Corrected wife’s iPhone model.
