Applied Instruments recently introduced its latest satellite finder signal level meter, the Super Buddy. The meter is an evolution of the company's flagship SAT 9520 model.

The Super Buddy was designed to help create an easier and quicker work environment for the professional installer. It allows the user to lock on a chosen satellite and obtain a positive ID of the bird. If a lock cannot be obtained on the requested satellite, the unit can automatically scan the surrounding birds to identify the unknown satellite.

The unit also contains a geo-sensitive "Field Guide" that shows only the satellites visible to the user's location. The Super Buddy's database contains satellites for DIRECTV, DISH Network, DTN, WildBlue and others, and all of the individual transponders. The unit's interface is similar to that of a PC, which the company said makes it simple to toggle between satellites and transponders.

The unit contains a zip code lookup that calculates the elevation and azimuth for each satellite based on the user's location. The Super Buddy also allows the user to control multi-switches and perform voltage/current measurements to assist with trouble shooting, the company said.

Said Applied Instruments General Manager Thomas Haywood, "We are excited to launch our newest satellite finder, the Super Buddy. Even though satellite delivery continues to become more complex everyday, we feel like the Super Buddy will make the installations easier, quicker, and more reliable. We borrowed features from our well-respected SAT 9520 signal level meter and added more features at a lower cost to make the Super Buddy a great value."
